Egypt (Suez Canal) Sept/Oct 2008 D-31

I took a bus (15EP=Rm10) from Cairo to Port Said to see the Suez Canal, 220km away. The bus trip took 3 hours. The 192km Suez Canal in Egypt is the main waterway for oil shipments from the Persian Gulf to Europe & US ports with more than 3,000 oil tankers passing through it annually. No wonder it is regarded as one of the civilized wonder of the world. As our bus approached the Port Said city center (1/2 million people), I could see from the bus window, some ships and tankers passing the canal. Both side of the canals have high bunds and guard posts to provide security protection to any passing ships.

On arrival at the bus terminal, I took a taxi to Port Said city center and wandered around. Port Said was founded in 1860 as a harbor on the Mediterranean coast. The digging of the Suez Canal started in 1859 and it was opened to traffic in 16 November 1869.

I took a ferry from Port Said to Port Fouad and spent a short while in both ports. Due to time constraints , we were not able to join a private tour of Suez Canal (US25).
At 6.30pm, I took a bus (20EP=Rm14) back to Cairo.

" Imagine the contribution of this 140 year old man made Suez Canal has done to the maritime industry of the world all these years "
