Turkey (Istanbul) Sept/Oct 2008 D-10

Tokapi Palace, Istanbul

Istanbul University

Haydarpasa Train Station

This morning I had breakfast at the hostel's roof top, overseeing the Bosphorus Straits. I befriended a new traveler from China and together we visited the Tokapi Palace in the morning. I re-visited the Blue mosque with my travel buddy and this time we stayed a bit longer to admire the exterior and interior of the building especially the minarets, domes, the colorful glass and the huge wall columns. We had to leave our shoes outside to enter.

We visited the Grand Bazzar, Kapali Carsi , a covered market with bright yellow and purple colored semi round structured tiled roof. The shopping mall has hundreds of shops selling all sorts of wares. A great place to shop !

We also saw the University of Istanbul but were not allowed entry without an official pass. Next, we walked to the Galata Bridge. At the bridge, there were a number of local residents indulged in fishing to past time. etc. After the bridge. we headed to the Taksim Square and the pedestrian street of Istklal Caddesi with both sides lined with up market shops & offices. This place is the face of modern Istanbul !

It was a bad day for my travel buddy from China. While crossing a small lane, his right foot was run over by a car. As he felt pain, the driver was kind enough to take him to a private hospital. After a X-ray and close examination by a doctor, he was discharged and the driver took us back to our hostel.

"What an amazing place to be in Istanbul ! Lots to see ! Old vs New Istanbul; East meets West; Roman vs Ottoman ..... for me to discover and ponder, its history, culture etc"
