Europe (Skopje, Macedonia) May 2014

Total expenses incurred (3 days): E$82.00
Hostel (2 nights) : Shanti Hostel - E$8 + E$10.00 (dorm) = E$18.00
Food & groceries: E$3.00
Bus: Skopje > Sofia - E$17.00
Train: Sofia > Bucharest - E$44.00 (2nd class sleeping berth)

The bus journey from Tirana to Skopje took around 9 hrs so it was close to midnight when I arrived at the bus terminal in Skopje. As my hostel is a 5 minutes walk from the bus station so I had a quick check in and shower before retired to bed at this wee hours of the time.

The Ottoman empire ruled Macedonia for hundreds of years. Macedonia was an ex-Yugoslavia state (1944-1991). It is a modern country and became a EU member in 2009. Skopje is the capital with a population of 600.000 people. Skopje is a popular tourist destination and the city has a lot of statutes & monuments built over the years. The famous stone bridge and the Macedonian Square are frequented by most tourists. Skopje is also the birth place of Mother Theresa.

After the Skopje visit, I took a bus to Sofia, Bulgaria. Upon arrival, I took a night train and continued my journey to Bucharest, Romania for a visit to Chisinau, Moldova. From Skopje, it was convenient for me to do a day trip to Pristina, Kosovo. It may be worthwhile for you to put up a night in Prizren , a popular tourist place in southern Kosovo.
