D12 Thursday April 23 2026 Part 2 (Weifang, Shandong) continued - after the Shouguang Vegetable April 2026 Expo visit, we took a Didi back to Weifang City & visited the famous Weifang World Kite Museum.
Weifang is globally recognised as the "Kite Capital of the World" boasting a 2,000 year history, it holds the annual Weifang International Festival every April (this year falls on April 18 2026 - so we miss the boat by 5 days !) attracting international enthusiasts & houses the world largest kite industry, exporting over 70% of the world's kites.
Chinese philosophers Mozi & Luban were the inventors of kites in China dating back to the 5th century BC, the earlier kites were made of wood & with the invention of paper in the Han dynasty, kites made of paper became popular !
1) Weifang World Kite Museum, Shandong - opened in 1980, it has 12 galleries with models & kites from China's ancient past to modern times, & kites from around the world. Interesting to see my home country (Malaysia) kites on display in this world class museum, also kites from Japan, Korea, USA & European countries ! Free admission !
