Day 14 Wednesday June 4 2025 (Padang) - my 2nd day in Padang; using a hired bike, we were able to visit 14 touristy places in south & downtown Padang, a very productive & fruitful day indeed.
1) Bike hire (IDR750k = Rm20.25 = US$4.60, filled up petrol full tank IDR300k, 08.30 > 12 midnight) from our Yani Homestay. Hence we have a full day using the bike to roam / visit a number of touristy places within the Padang city & outlying areas.
1) Bike visit No 1 - using the hired bike, we made a visit to Padang Chinatown to get a feel of the bustling morning market (lined with mom & pop shops, provision stalls, petty traders selling fresh eggs, fruit & vegetables, fresh slaughterd chickens etc, interesting to see a number of food stalls run by the local Chinese community & the range of traditional Chinese food sold here are similar to that we found in Pasar Pagi or Malam (morning & night market) in my home country ie chicken porridge, black glutinous rice dessert, fried dough (you tia), kueh kueh (snacks), fried kway teow, noodle & mihoon, salted eggs, etc
My early morning breakfast in Warkop Koban, Padang Chinatown, each of us savoured a bowl of chicken porridge, a cup of local coffee / condensed milk & together with some finger food ie apom (pancake in chocolate puff or shredded coconut), a very satisfying meal to kick start our day in Padang !
Taobao (takeaway) from local food stalls ie apom (pancake) & kue pancung (traditional snack made of rice flour & coconut based batter cooked in special mold pan), both these finger food / snacks are delicious to eat as a light lunch during the day !
2) Bike visit No 2 (Siti Nurbaya Hills) - located 2.2km from south Padang, an uphill ride to have a panoramic view of Padang suburbs & nearby beaches & islands etc, picturesque, cool & pleasant !
3) Bike visit No 3 (Pantai Air Manis) - a popular beach (1.1 mile trail) near Padang, a surf spot located in Sumatra Mainland, the spot provides both left & right waves.
4) Bike visit No 4 (Batu Malin Kundang) - a small historic place near a beach in Air Manis, a number of souvenir shops operating here, there is a folklore story about an ungrateful son named Malin Kundang who was turned into a stone .....
