Day 2 Friday May 23 2025 (Aceh, North Sumatra) - my 2nd day in Banda Aceh, spending my morning & afternoon sessions (using GrabCar) visiting the major Tsunami Dec 2004 landmarks & iconic sites (a grim reminder of this devastating disaster causing untold damage to massive loss of properties & thousands of human lives in Aceh & the surrounding region which happened 21 years ago !) ie the stranded PLTD Apung 1 vessel washed ashore in Banda Aceh now a live museum, the Tsunami Museum Aceh, Tugu (Monument) Tsunami, Taman Blang Padang, Taman Sari Gunongan & Ulee Lheue Beach & Port etc 

1) Morning walk from Mulia Homestay to wet market & old Pasar Atieh (Aceh) followed by a bridge crossing & a short walk to Baiturrahman Grand Mosque.  


2) Masjid Baithurrahman Grand Mosque, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - the larggest mosque in Banda Aceh, survived the 2004 Aceh Tsunami due to its strong construction & foundation.  


3) Lapangan Blang Padang, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - a public park in Banda Aceh, a Tsunami Monument / Memorial + Monumen Aceh Thanks To The World (53 countries donated for Tsunami disaster of Aceh). 


4) Tugu Tsunami (Monument), Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - happened on Boxing Day Dec 26 2004, 9.2 earthquake & Indian Ocean tsunami, Aceh was the epicentre, waves up to 30m (100ft) high, killing 227,898 people in 14 countries (the worst hit were Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka & Thailand). 


5) Museum Tsunami Aceh, Banda Aceh - closed to public on Friday (today) so we will show up tomorrow so as not to miss visiting this important landmark in Banda Aceh ! 


6) Taman Sari Kota Banda Aceh, Bustanus Salatin, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra. 


7) Taman Sari Gunongan, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - a historical park, built by Iskandar Muda, contains a 17th century palace, garden & white circular structure whose purpose is unknown ! 


8) Gunongan Kopi Cafe, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - enjoying a cup of Gunongan Kopi @IDR8k = Rm2.15) - serving the best coffee in town ! A great place to sip a coffee & rest my feet after a long session of morning walk !  


9) Taman Seni Dan Budaya, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - closed on Friday at the time of my visit ! 


10) Continuing my walk from Taman Sari Gunongan > Museum Aceh, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra.


11) Museum Aceh, Aceh, North Sumatra - one of the oldest museums in Indonesia, built in 1915. 


12) Kota Pusaka, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - a historic & cultural centre in downtown Aceh. 


13) Taman Tugu Adipura Kota Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - continuing my walk towards Mulia Homestay. 


14) After a short rest in our hotel, hailed a Grab & visited the Museum PLTD Apung 1 vessel 


15) Masjid Subulussalam, Jaya Baru, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - located opposite the PLTD Apung 1 site.  



16) Situs Tsunami PLTD Apung, Aceh, North Sumatra - a former electric generator barge stranded on dry land in Banda Aceh during the Tsunami 2004, this 2,600 ton vessel was at sea when the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake & tsunami occurred with the tsunami carrying it 2 to 3 km inland !  A must visit when in Aceh as this huge barge is too heavy to re-located & now a major tourist attraction in Banda Aceh ! Entrance fee IDR6k = Rm1.60)



17) Tugu (Monument) Tsunami, Aceh, North Sumatra 


18) Rumah Puing, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - houses damaged by the powerful Tsunami Aceh 2004 !

20) Walk up to upper floor of PLTD Apung 1 vessel to view the interior main hull (the hull is a key element of the memorial) providing a stark visual representation of the tsunami power ! 


21) Audio visual presentation on Tsunami Aceh Dec 2004 - the aftermath of the massive 9.2 earthquake & tsunami in Aceh, North Sumatra 


22) A panoramic view of Banda Aceh as viewed from the upper floor of the PLTD Agung 1 vessel. 


23) Beaches along the Ulee Lheue Port, a perfect spot to watch sunset ! 


24) Ulee Lkeue Park, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra. 


25) Pantai Cermin Ulee Lheue, Banda Aceh, North Sumatra - a popular beach near the port area. 


26) Pelabuhan (Port) Ulee Iheue, Aceh, North Sumatra - familiarisation visit, picked up info re ferry services to nearby islands for vacations ie Weh Island (also known as Sabang) & Breueh Island etc 


27) Dinner in a local restaurant in downtown Aceh - each of us savoured a plate of rice with curry & deep fried chicken, total food bill for 2 is IDR91k (Rm24.50), bought 4 pieces of Apom Balik IDR10k (Rm2.70) as takeaway for supper & morning breakfast.
