Indonesia (My 16 days in Sumatra Island - Acheh, Medan, Lake Toba, Dumai, Pekanbaru, Bukittinggi & Padang) May 22 > June 5 2025 Day 4 (Medan)

Day 4 Sunday May 25 2025 (Medan, North Sumatra) - my 1st night stay & 1st time visit to Medan after a 13 hour arduous overnight bus journey from Banda Aceh, spent the day visiting a few major touristy places in Kota Medan ie Clock Tower, Old Medan Town, Tjong A Fie Mansion, Masjid Raya Al-Mashun & Deli Park Mall.

(596km, 13 hours by bus)

1) The rising sun as viewed from the moving bus from Acheh > Medan (approx 596km, 13 hours by bus). 


2) Brief stopover at PMTOH bus depot off the expressway & arriving in a bus drop off point in downtown Medan & hailed a Grab IDR35k (Rm9.50) to Permata Inn, Medan for our hotel check-in. 


3) Hotel Accommodation (Medan); my 3 nights stay in Permala Inn, Medan, room tariff @Rm48 (US$11), twin sharing 


4) Downtown Medan near Clock Tower & Deli Park Mall, Medan 


5) Minivan (Mr X) ride near Clock Tower > Terminal Amplas to inquire bus tickets from Medan > Parapat (Lake Toba) for our outstation trip tomorrow & overnight bus ride from Medan > Dumai after our Lake Toba visit.  


6) Arriving in Terminal Amplas, Medan, North Sumatra, a modern transport hub in Kota Medan (bus services from Medan > Lake Toba, inter-city bus services to regional Sumatra & Java. 


7) Minivan (Mr X) ride from Termianl Amplas > Clock Tower nearby Permata Inn, Kota Medan. 


8) Masjid Raya AL - Mashun, Medan, Sumatra - walkabout near Masjid Raya AL-Mashun or Grand Mosque of Medan, built in 1905, in the beginning, the mosque was part of the Maimun palace complex, its architectural style combines Middle Eastern, Indian & Spanish elements. 


9) Passing by the famous RM Pondok Gurith, (serving the best Indonesian food) Kota Medan, a local restaurant famous for fish head curry dish & nasi sayur wrapped in banana leaves, many Grab food drivers queuing up to order takeaways during the day & night in this restaurant ! 


10) Oud Medan, Tirtanadi "Dutch Indie" Water Tower, Kota Medan, North Sumatra - a water tower dating back to 1908 built by the Dutch colonial government to provide clean water to the locals during the colonial era in the city of Medan. 


11) Kesawan Medan Old Town, Kota Medan - many old buildings along the Ahman Jani Street, a number of art deco buildings have been restored from the Dutch times turning the place into a cultural destination for international tourists / visitors. 



12) Tjong A Fie Mansion, Medan, Sumatra - a Dutch colonial-style two story 35 room mansion (1860 > 1921) in Medan, built by Tjong A Fie, a Hakka merchant who came to own much of the land in Medan through its plantations, later becoming "Majoor der Chineezen in Medan & constructing the Medan - Belawan Railway, now a museum exhibiting an excellent collections of Chinese porcelain wares, artifacts etc, entrance fee IDR35k (Rm9.45), a must visit when in Medan ! 



13) Continuing my walkabout in Ahmad Jani Street to admire the old historic buildings built during the Dutch colonial period during the 18th century !


14) Dinner in Mie Pangsit Siantar, Kota Medan, North Sumatra - each of us savoured a bowl of Indon-style wan tan noodle @IDR39k = Rm10.50

15) Evening stroll & window shopping from Permala Inn  > DeliPark Mall, Kota Medan. 


16) JW Marriot Hotel & the surrounding, Kota Medan, North Sumatra. 



17) DeliPark Mall, Medan, North Sumatra - a upmarket modern shopping mall in Medan city, near J W Marriott Hotel.
