India (Darjeeling, West Bengal) Sept/Oct 2019 Part 4 (Darjeeling Himalayan Railway)


" The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as DHR or the Toy Train, is a 2ft gauge railway that runs between Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. Built between 1879 & 1881, it is about 88km long "

4) Himalayan railway trains (toy trains to the clouds) parked at the platforms of the old Darjeeling station - today is a religious public holiday, appeared that no train services today as I waited anxiously in the evening from 17.15 to 18.30 hopefully to see a toy train in action ! But no luck ! 


5) Old Toy trains on showroom display at the Old Darjeeling goods shed; in remembrance of these toy train services during the good old colonial days, the likes of "Whistle Queen", "Queen Of The Hills", "Himalayan Bird" etc.

My Good Old Days taking a toy train from Shimla railway station (Himachal Pradesh) > Kalka (UNESCO World Heritage site) in 2007; Shimla railway station is 2,075m above sea level whereas Darjeeling Railway station is located at an altitude of 2,200m; the Simla-Kalka toy train ride spanning 60 miles covering 102 tunnels, 864 bridges & 919 stunning curves.
