Day 4 - Matsumoto > Kamikochi (120km)
Kamikochi is a remote mountainous highland valley within the Hida Mountain Range, in the western region of Nagano Prefecture. It has been preserved in its natural state within Chubu-Sangaku National Park.
DIY (Do it yourself) free & easy from Takayama or Matsumoto to Kamikochi:
- By Bus from Takayama - take a Nohi bus from Takayama to Hirayu Onsen (1 hr, Y1,570=Rm64) where there are 2 buses per hour to Kamicochi (25 mins, Y1,160=Rm47 one way. Y2,050=Rm84 round trip)
- By train & bus from Matsumoto - take the Matsumoto Electric Railway from Matsumoto station to Shin-Shimashima station (30mins) followed by a bus ride to Kamikochi (1 hr). There are also a small number of direct buses from Matsumoto Bus Terminal to Kamikochi (Y2,450=Rm100 one way, round trip is Y4,550=Rm185)
- Private cars are not allowed to enter Kamikochi
1) Chubu Sangaku National Park, Kamikochi - one of the most scenic spot in Japan, featuring vast virgin forests of birch trees and Japanese larch trees
2) Hotaka Mountain Range
3) Kappa-bashi Bridge - a 366 meter long and 3.1 meter wide wooden suspension bridge over the Azusa-gawa River. With the Hotaka Mountain Range rising in front and the volcanic Mt Yake-dake in the south billowing white smoke, Kappa-bashi is known as one of the most scenic spots in Kamikochi
5) Set Lunch at a resort restaurant at the National Park - a chance to taste the special salt baked fish - thanks to Parlo !
