Shangrila is about 306km from Daocheng and the bus journey takes about 10 hrs. Shangrila is about 5 hrs from Lijiang old town.
Shangrila was formerly called Zhongdian. When I visited Yading Nature Reserve, our bus passed through a small town also called Shangrila. So there is some confusion here due probably to two provinces ie Si Chuan & Yunnan competing to promote their own towns using the same name to lure for more tourists.
I spent a night in Shangrila at a youth hostel together with a group of 7-8 Chinese tourists. In the evening & early morning, our group visited the Shangrila old town. The old town was partially burned down in January 2014. For dinner, we had a steamboat meal and a cool Chinese beer before retiring to bed.

If time permits, you could join a private tour to visit the Songzanglin monastery, Potatso National Park, Felai monastery, Shodu & Bita Lake, Baishitai terrace etc.
