Food: Y153
Taxi: Y10
Hostel (3 nights): Daocheng MaMa IYH Y45 x 3 (dorm)
Bus: Kangding>Daocheng (via Yajiang & Litang) Y136 + Y10 (service fee)
Our bus from Kangding took 13-14 hrs to arrive at Daocheng, a distance of 458km. It was not a easy drive due to poor road conditions, narrow & bumpy roads, 4 high mountain passes (4,400-4,700m) & numerous twists & turns. Some stretches of roads a few miles before reaching Daocheng are now under construction so hopefully by early next year the drive will be a smoother one.
Originally I intend to stay a night in Litang but changed my mind so I put up 3 nights in Daocheng. However, the bus had a brief stopover in Ya Jiang & Litang and this allowed me to catch a glimpse of these towns.
Though the bus journey was tough & difficult, I was impressed with the spectacular & scary mountain scenery.
Daocheng town is small & dusty. Most of the street light in the town center were very dim so just have to be extra careful when walking along the small lanes & side streets.
Daocheng has 2-3 youth hostels located within walking distance from the central bus station- so pick your choice.

Buying bus tickets from the central bus station was a challenge as many locals through inside connections buy multiple tickets at the counter and sell them for a quick profit. I had to queue up at the ticket counter early in the morning and it took me an hour before I manage to buy 2 tickets for my next visit to Shangrila (Zhongdian). Majority of the long distance buses depart Daocheng (only one daily bus departure to Shangrila) at around 06.00 in the morning so make sure you arrive 15-30 minutes earlier.
A number of tourists could prefer to stay in Yading Village inside the resort area but the hostels there lack amenities like electricity & hot showers.
Through our hostels, three of our hostel guests & myself booked a private vehicle for a return trip from Daocheng to Yading Nature Reserve - takes 1.5 hr each way.
