Map of Wellington

Wellington is the capital & the 2nd largest city of New Zealand.

After visited Auckland & Rotorua, Wellington was the 3rd city in North Island I visited and stayed for overnight. Upon my return visit from the South Island, I stayed for one more night in Wellington before heading back to Auckland, the last leg of my visit in New Zealand.

During my short stay in Wellington, my time was well spent and I managed to visit a number of touristy places in and around Wellington ie the old Wellington train station, the Art Fern & Civic Square, Cuba street, an hour of escorted tour of the Parliament building, Wellington harbor & waterfront, Oriental bay, Te Papa & Wellington museums, the downtown city centre & a cable car ride to the Wellington Botanical gardens. As both Auckland & Wellington have a scenic harbor & waterfront, I really enjoyed my time in these places. From the Oriental Bay, I was able to see Mt Victoria but instead of taking a uphill walk to Mt Victoria, I opted for a Wellington cable car ride from Lambton Quay to Kelburn Lookout. From the Kelburn Lookout I was able to enjoy a scenic view of Wellington !

The highlight of my visit to Wellington was to take the Interislander ferry (considered to be an adventurous sea journey) which operates daily services between Wellington & Picton - the journey time is approximately 3.5 hours. As I was doing the round the North & South island visit, I had to do two ferry crossings between Wellington & Picton - one in the morning and my return trip in the afternoon. The ferry passed through the Cook Strait which lies between North & South islands. It connects the Tasman Sea & the South Pacific Ocean. Thanks god, the sea was calm when I took the two ferry crossings - the sea can be very rough & treacherous at times ! For a ferry ticket of NZ$50-$55 one way, you are taking one of the most beautiful ferry ride in the world. I sat in a front row seat of the ocean view lounge located on the 7th floor of the Interislander ferry - the view was spectacular especially when I spotted several dolphins leaping from the water, swinging in action - what a sight ! No regret at all for me taking these ferry crossings between the North & South islands & vice versa !
