New Zealand (Christchurch, South Island) March/April 2016

Total costs incurred (3 days) : NZ$151.09
Hostel (2 nights) : NZ$74 (dorm)
Food: NZ$18.10
Bus: NZ$58.99 (InterCity Christchurch > Queenstown)

5) Christchurch > Queenstown (Bus)

My 5th bus ride (Newmans Coach Lines) departing Outside Canterbury Museum, Rollerston Avenue, nearest intersection Worcester Boulevard to Athol St in the middle of the car park, Queenstown (08.30>16.30) - 483km

The bus made several stopovers ie Geraldine, Lake Tekapo, Omarama, Cromwell before arriving Queenstown.

I stayed for 2 nights in Christchurch, the largest city in South Island & the 3rd largest behind Auckland & Wellington. Christchurch was the first place of settlement by the Moa-hunting tribes during the ancient days. Moa, a large bird weighing up to 230kg is now extinct in NZ - what a sad story !

During 2010-2012, three earthquakes caused extensive damage to this city and over 1,000 buildings were demolished after the quakes - another sad story !

In Christchurch, I stayed in YMCA hostel which was a 5 minutes walk to the Canterbury Museum & Christchurch Botanical Gardens. Other places I visited were Re-Start City Mall, New Regent Street, Cathedral Square, South City Shopping Mall, Bridge of Remembrance, Victoria Square, Victorian Clock Tower, Hagley Park and the downtown areas. Those with a deep pocket can always try their luck in the Christchurch Casino - you are most welcome to enter !

Christchurch is a city of art and a number of their buildings located in downtown were painted with mural art - very pleasing to look at. I was so intrigued with this creative art around the city and this prompted me to do a "treasure hunt" and took a number of these mural art pictures moving from one street to another ! The sights of these city art cheered up my stay in Christchurch !

To save time, tourists could rely on the Christchurch Tramway which plies around many of the major touristy places in town.
