China (Kanas Lake & Karamay, Xinjiang) May 2006 D-9

Map of Karamay, Xinjiang

1) After taken our breakfast, we decided to sign up a tour (Rmb30) to a look out point called Guanyu Ting (2,030m). From the pavilion, we could have a panorama view of Kanas Lake, the Friendship Peak and the grassland. To get up to the pavilion, we had to walk up to a number of steps and as it was drizzling at that time, we had to exercise extra care as the steps were slippery.

2) Bye Bye, Kanas Lake - what a wonderful visit for me & my brother to this Northern remote Xinjiang region near the Russian border !

After the Guanyu Ting visit, we checked out of our hostel and today, we had a long journey back to Urumqi. But on our way, we had the opportunity to visit the demon city in Karamay.

As our bus was making the descend from the Altay mountain, the snow white alpine scenery on both side of the road was spectacular. No wonder this place is nicknamed as the "Swiss Alps of Asia" .

3) For my return journey from Kanas Geological Park to Urumqi,  our bus made a brief stopover in " Demon City or Windy City " & along the dessert highway, we saw countless of crisscrossing earth mounds in different heights like ancient castles, which was formed because of dry climate & strong wind  ! What an unusual sight & experience when I alighted from the bus to catch a glimpse of this unique landscape in the middle of the Gobi dessert ! A no man land, harsh, gusty speed which could throw a person off easily, abandoned dessert town, very eerie feeling ! An ideal place for film making using the rough terrain as background ! Tourists paid Rmb40 to enter.

" From one extreme to another ! From a landscape of natural beauty to a place called Demon city ! How do you like it ? Nature has it's ugly side too "
