China (Urumuqi, Xinjiang) May 2006 D-11

Map of Urumqi, Xinjiang

After the Kanas and Heaven Lake tours, today was the most relaxing one and I just focused our visit on two major tourist sights in Urumqi ie Xinjiang Autonomous Region Museum & the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar.

1) In the morning, I took a bus to the Xinjiang Museum (Rmb25) and spent 2 hrs there looking at the various exhibits, artefacts of historical importance. There were a series of old pictures depicting the political developments that took place in Xinjiang for the last 400 yrs. All these years, the Uighurs, Karakhanid and Karakhita tribal kingdoms had a great influence in Xinjiang in terms of culture, food & customs. No photography was allowed inside the museum.

2) Next, we took a taxi and visited the popular Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar. The bazaar had a number of souvenir and food stalls and we really enjoyed our time there. We had a taste of local ice cream and it was really good. Tourists had a great time patronizing the various stalls selling hand made knives, sliver and pewter wares, jewelry, Hotan white jade stones, musical instruments etc. Some building structures there were quite unique reflecting a truly Xinjiang character. We walked into a Carrefour Hypermarket and bought some local snacks to bring home.

" Urumqi is not a ulu place at all ! What I saw and experienced in this northern Xinjiang city was very exotic and interesting "
