China (Hua Shan, Shaanxi) May 2006 D-16

Like yesterday, I signed up for another full day tour (Rmb50) to Hua Shan, located about 120km east of Xian. I paid Rmb100 for admission and Rmb110 for the cable car ride to the top. you could choose to take the cable car or walk all the way up from the foot of Hua Shan to the North Peak. A big challenge & you probably have to be super fit !

Hua Shan is 2,160m high and there are five peaks and if you really want to climb all the peaks, this may take a full day or some prefer to stay overnight and start the climb in the early morning so as to get to one of the peaks to catch a sunrise. Despite the help of concrete steps and guard rails, certain stretch of the mountain roads are very stiff and you need to hold on the steel chains to inch your way up or down. As we were given 3 hours in Hua San, I was not able to do all the climbs but I had a great view of the mountain scenery from one of the peaks. It was great experience for me walking up the Hua Shan North Peak. You have to be physically and psychological prepared to do this climb and for the weaker ones, just stop at a level you feel comfortable and not to over stress yourself. Some rocks have Chinese words carved on it carrying messages denoting a precarious climb tone.

We were back at the foot of Hua Shan at around 4.30pm as told by our tourist guide. Unfortunately, a number of our local Chinses tourists did not return to the bus until 7.00pm. So by the time we got back to Xian, it was around 9.00pm.

" Indeed the mountain scenery from the top was stunning ! But you have to pluck out a lot of courage doing the steep climb by foot. Not for the faint hearted and those suffering from height phobia "
