Taiwan (Post Covid-19 Overseas Visit No 8 - My 20 days Free & Easy Visit to Taiwan) Day 17 - Tainan, Taiwan (March 23 2024)

Day 17 March 23 2024 Saturday (Tainan, Taiwan) - a long day of visits for our group, visited a few Tainan historic sites / touristy places in Tainan city & Anping District ie Confucius Temple, Former Tainan District Court, Zheng Cheng Gong Ancestor Temple, Tainan Art Museum, Shuixian Gong Morning Market, Shennong Street, Taijiang National Park, Eternal Golden Castle, Navy Destroyer Museum & Snail Lane. 

1) Confucius Temple, Tainan - built in 1666, the 1st Confucius Temple before the end of Manchu Dynasty, it was the location of the highest official institute of higher learning in Taiwan, entrance fee NT70 (Rm10.50), visited the external site early in the morning (06.15) & the surrounding !


2) Tainan Municipal West Central District Jhongyi Elementary School - next to a local park & the Confucius Temple. 


3) Tainan Art Museum Building 2 - a pentagon shaped building, simple & clean profile & pure white exterior walls, striking space for contemporary Taiwanese art & sculpture exhibitions with a restaurant & cafe, entrance fee NT150 (Rm22.50) for both buildings, my external visit only, near the Confucius Temple  ! 

4) Former Tainan District Court - designed by a Japanese architect, constructed in 1914, operating as a rule of law in Taiwan for 87 years & became a National Historic Monument in 1991 !



5) Land Bank of Taiwan (HQ), Xiangyang Road, Tainan - a  Japanese colonial building, built in 1933, former Taipei branch of Nippon Kangyo Bank. 


6) Zheng Cheng Gong Ancestor Temple / Shrine, Tainan - a war hero (born in Japan in 1624) during the Ming Dynasty & educated in China, with a fleet of 25,000 men, Zheng took over Taiwan from the Dutch & built the island into a safe haven ! Achieved a god-like status by many Taiwanese 


7) Wandering downtown Tainan city within walking distance from our hotel - exploratory visit to see a greater Tainan city !  


8) Shuxian Gong Market, Tainan - a traditional morning market & street food stalls


9) Our group's breakfast (mixed vegetable rice NT$70 = Rm10.50), small eats (vegetable dumpling NT$25 = Rm3.75 + sweetcorn NT$30 = Rm4.50) & takeaway (sugarcane marinated chicken drumstick NT$170 = Rm25.50 + 2 mandarin oranges NT$20 =Rm3) in Shuxian Gong Market, Tainan City. 


10) Shennong Street, Tainan - a landmark avenue dating from the Qing Dynasty, lined with quaint, historic shops & homes ! Located opposite the  Shuxian Gong Market. 


11) Taijiang National Park, Tainan - established in 2009, the Park is located on the southwest coast of Taiwan, free admission, our group of 4 hailed a Uber cab (NT$266 = Rm40) from Shuxian Gong Market to this Park (7.9km)


12) Taijiang National Park Theatre - audio visual presentation (15 mins) on Taijiang National Park captioned " Fertile Fields, Fruitful Seas ".


13) Taijiang National Park Visitor Center - provides information on Taijiang ecosystem exhibits of various species of migratory birds commonly found in the habitat of the Park. 


14) Taijiang Inner Sea / Coast & Tour Boat Jetty. 


15) Tour boar ride (1 hr 15 mins) - NT200 (Rm30) per pax covering 4 activities ie close up view of oyster farming, trawling of fish nets & cages, birds watching by binoculars etc 


16) Tour Boat Ride Activity No 1 - a close up view of oysters farming in open sea !  


17) Tour Boat Ride - Activity No 2 - demonstrating the art of using fishing nets for trawling in open sea !  My travel buddy, Thompson participated in this activity !  


18) Tour Boat Ride Activity No 3 - the park falls within the migratory route of Asian birds (frequented each autumn & winter by the black-faced spoonbill, Chinese goshawk, Kentish plover, black winged stilt, eastern curlew & peregrine falcon; using standing binoculars tourists have the opportunities to view the migratory birds from far ! 


19) Tour Boat Ride Activity No 4  - demonstrating the use of cages (shaped like a dragon or funnel) to catch crabs & trawling of the fishing nets on to open sea ! Tourists are encouraged to participate ! 


20) Sicao Mangrove Green Tunnel & peaceful stretch of still water - stretches of overarching branches of mangrove trees (4 types of mangrove species are found along the banks of this tunnel); slowing down of tour boat for photo shooting using the dense mangrove trees as background. 


21) Fish angling in the park - a part time hobby for locals during the weekends, anglers trying their luck to catch fish using a rod & line sitting patiently on the bamboo rafts under a scotching sun but enjoying the sea breeze ! 


22) End of our tour boat ride - an interesting experience & educational for our group, enhancing our understanding about the ecosystem of Taijiang National Park in Tainan & the impact human being have on the environment surrounding this wetland park ! 


23) After the boat ride, our group took a Bus No 99 (Anping Taijiang Route) from a nearby bus stop located opposite the Park to Anping town to visit 


24) Eternal Golden Castle, Anping District, Tainan - closed for renovation 


25) Navy Destroyer Museum, Anping, Tainan - entrance fee NT$100 (Rm15) - this USS Sarsfield was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy having served in Taiwan's navy as ROCS Te Yang for 27 years & now is a ship museum. 


26) Bus ride from Navy Destroyer Museum Bus Stop > Tainan City 


27) Snail lane, Tainan City - district of narrow passageways decorated with colorful murals of snails & quirky installations. 


28) Severage Drainage Cover nearby the Snails Alley, Tainan
