China (Garze - Sichuan) Sept 2012

Map of Garze, Sichuan, China

Hostel (1 night) : Y40 (twin bed dorm)
Mini van: Y150
Food: Y67

Total cost incurred (2 days): Y257

Yushu, Qinghai > Garze (442km) Si Chuan, China

1) The start of my minivan ride (after midnight) from Yushu, Qinghai > Garze, Si Chuan (442 km) - a long, arduous & tiresome land journey but well rewarded after seeing this part of Tibetan Plateau with a stunning countryside scenery  !

2) Garze (3,500m), Sichuan -town with a strong Tibetan character & flavor. Perched on an average altitude of 3,500m, the annual average temperature in Garze is around 8'C. I put up a night in Garze and enjoyed my time wandering around the main shopping streets, spotting monks in crimson robes; visiting Tibetan temples and admiring the surrounding scenery. An ideal town for a night rest after a tiresome overnight trip from Yushu ! This Garze visit is just to satisfy my curiosity in seeing a part of the Tibetan plateau in China due to my difficulty in obtaining an entry permit as a solo free & easy traveller to visit Tibet !

2) Early morning countryside scenery from Garze > Kangding, Si Chuan (365km) as viewed from the minivan's windows - off the beaten track bus journey, Tibetan Plateau landscape, rising sun, breathing fresh cool mountain air, quaint little country towns, winding roads, green pasture lands, cattle grazing, herd of yaks loaded with goods crossing the main trunk road, snow-capped mountains & lakes, fallen rocks, monasteries & temples, river valleys & streams; as for me I just sit & relax, just enjoy every moment of it, a difficult road journey, maybe this visit may be my once in a life time experience !

Garze > Kanding (365km)
Si Chuan, China

Tibetan Corridor Secret Land Jiu Long !

3) Overnight stay in Kangding, Sichuan - a nice country town closer to Chengdu, capital of Si Chuan !

3) A herd of yaks, yaks & yaks becoming king of the roads - traffic came to a standstill,  the yaks yaking in line in slow motion to an open pasture land led by a herdsman, what an interesting sight !

" The yummy Tibetan food menu ! How about Tibetan dumplings (momo), yak butter, yak butter tea, yak meat cold dish noodles, steamed stuffed buns with yak meat or beef (baozi) , cold shredded carrot & potato dish for breakfast, lunch and dinner in one go ! "

  2. 3 inclusive of the drivers at the front, 3 in the middle row and 3 at the back - a total of 9 people - not a comfortable ride for a 11-12 hr overnight journey. Yes 150 yen per pax !
