Fez, Morocco

There was a lot of anxiety in planning my trip from Algeciras, Spain to Fez, Morocco especially re ferry crossings, taxis, bus & train services from Tanger to Fez and vice versa; hostel accommodation in Fez & language barriers etc. But after some internet research, most of these fears were overcome.

After some expert advice from the hostel and to save time, I bought a fast ferry ticket (E$35) from a local travel agent and also changed some Moroccan currencies (E$1=MAD11) for my two day trip to Fez. The FRS ferry ticket entitled me for a free bus shuttle service (08.00) from Algeciras port to Latifa. I boarded the ferry at around 09.00 and arrived at the old Tanger port at around 09.45. My Passport was checked and stamped by the Moroccan Immigration Authorities located on the 1st Floor of the ferry.

From the old Tanger Port, I took a petit taxi (MAD20=E$1.80) to Tanger train station (3km) and boarded a train (MAD105=E$9.50) departing at 11.00 to Fez. The train journey took about 5 hrs.

Upon arrival at the Fez train station, I took a taxi (MAD11=E$1.0) to my hostel. After my hostel check in, I started to venture out into the Medina, near the R'cif Square. Once inside the Medina, one could easily get lost as there are 1,000 small & narrow alleys criss-crossing the area - for the first hour of walking in the Medina, it was quite challenging for me to find the landmarks and the direction of my hostel. Donkeys loaded with sundry goods also passed through the alleys. But I enjoyed every moment of it in Fez.

The next morning, I signed up for a walking tour (3hr-E$5.0) arranged by the hostel. The local guide spoke excellent English and took us to visit the Medina, a tannery, leather goods and garment wear shops - a very good outing and we gained a lot of knowledge on local customs, culture and the daily life of the local residents in Fez. Another great outcome for me after seeing this mysterious old city of Fez in Morocco ! Mind you, Fez was founded in 789 !

On my final day, I took a CIM bus (MAD100=E$9.10) from the new city of Fez (23.00>04.30) to Tanger bus station. At 06.00, I took a free shuttle bus service to Tanger-Med port and boarded a ferry (MAD220=E$20) to Algeciras (arriving 10.00). On arrival, I walked to the Algeciras train station (15 mins) and bought a train ticket ( departing 11.00) for my trip to Granada.

Everything seemed to work well for this particular visit from Algeciras, Spain to Tanger / Fez, Morocco - you reap what you sow. Well done, K M Cheng !

The 2nd last photo I posted in this blog is the Fes Hostel I stayed in Fez, Morocco. That was the reception and common area where I spent my time interacting with travelers from all corners of the globe. The front entrance of this hostel was not impressive at all but once inside, just take a quick look at the decor, color & furnishing; isn't it looked great ?

The last photo - our local tour guide took our English speaking group to a Moroccan fashion wear outlet - 4 of us were dressed like a typical Moroccan - am I looked like a Mr Moroccan or a fake Muslim ?

Do make yourself at home when you are in foreign lands and have fun in travelling !!!
