Taiwan (Post Covid-19 Overseas Visit No 8 - My 20 days Free & Easy Visit to Taiwan) Day 6 - Keelung (Yehliu Geopark),Taiwan (March 12 2024)

Day 6 March 12 2024 Tuesday (Keelung, Taiwan) - main focus for today is visiting Yehliu Geopark (a top rated sight in Taiwan) by taking a bus No 790 from Keelung City (opposite the Maritime Plaza or in front of Chenghuang Temple) > Yehliu Fishing Port > a short walk to Yehliu Geopark.

(16km, 40mins)

1) Early morning walk from Yung Feng Hotel to Renai Market - buying of pastries NT$75 (Rm11.25) as lunch for our day trip to Yehliu Geopark & a light breakfast (porridge + noodle NT$45 (Rm6.75). 


2) Yehliu Fishing Port, Yehliu Village, Wanli District, New Taipei City, Taiwan - built on using Natural Bay Ao on the west side of the Yehliu Peninsula, famous for Wanli crabs, at the far end of the fishing port (near a green pole lighthouse) is a angler's haven ! 

 

3) Bao'an (Protection) Temple, Yehliu Fishing Port, Wanli District - worship the Scared Lord of Zhangzhou Settlers, the most respected deity in Wanli, every January 15 of the lunar calendar, the community here will hold a Yehliu Port Purification Festival which has been around for more than a century, the festival is characterised by "coming from the water & leaving through fire", the rites include "patrolling oceans", "full ships of harvests", "deities purifying the port" & "deities crossing fire", this century old religious event is one and only in Taiwan !  


Yehliu Geopark, New Taipei City, Wanli District, Taiwan - a cape of about 1.7km long formed by Datun Mountain reaching into the sea, when overlooked from above, the place is like a giant turtle, scenic coastal views, iconic rock formations ie Queen's Head, Cute Princess (resembles a girl with a pony tail), Mushroom Rocks, Sea Caves, Tofu Rocks, Candle Rocks & Giant Kettles make this geopark a popular Instagram spot & most visited place in Taiwan !  

4) After the Yehliu Fishing Port visit, our group continued the walk along the main street towards the Yehliu Geopark Visitor Centre, admission ticket NT$120 (Adult, Rm18), my last visit to Yehliu Geopark was in Nov 2004 (a lapse of 20 years) ! Adjacent to the park is the Yehliu Ocean World, the first ocean animal theme park in Taiwan.  


5) Scenic coastlines & deep blue sea, Yehliu Geopark, New Taipei City, Wanli District, Taiwan 


6) Elevated viewing platform, direction signs & red line markings (do no cross), no standing or sitting on rocks & security supervision, Yehliu Geopark 


7) Iconic rock formations (caused by geological forces & erosion), Yehliu Geopark - the popular ones are mushroom heads & candle rock (Area 1), Queen's Head, Dragon's Head Rock & Gorilla Rock  (Area 2) & Fairly's Shoe & Peanut Rock (close to the sea); the Third Area is the wave-cut formation featuring 24 Filial - Piety Hill & Pearl Rock.

34) Yehliu Special Produce Street - grab a bite or buy home a few packets of local delicacies or produces before exiting the park. Bye Bye Yehliu Geopark - a top rated sight in Taiwan !  


35) Yehliu Seafood Restaurant Street, Wanli District - for seafood lovers but come with a price ! 


36) After waited for more than an hour for a Yehliu > Keelung public bus at a bus stop near a Yehliu Fishing Port traffic junction (no show), our group decided to take a public bus bound for Taipei instead (many bus services on this route) - so a fun bus ride to Taipei City to catch a return bus ride to Keelung - a long winded way to get back to our hotel in Keelung !

38) Taipei bus arriving in Maritime Plaza Terminal, Keelung - a short walk to Yung Fung Hotel  


39) Food Glorious Taiwanese Food - dinner in a Cantonese-style food restaurant (newly opened) in downtown Keelung - savoured 2 plates of a combination of roasted duck / roasted chicken / smoked sausages / 3 varieties of vegetables + rice totalled NT$95 x 2 = NT$190 (Rm28.50) for sharing of 2 - the best dinner meal I enjoyed in my traveling to Taiwan thus far !
