Malaysia (Post Covid-19 My Cuti Cuti Malaysia -George Town, Bukit Mertajam, Penang & Alor Setar, Kedah) - Day 2 Friday Oct 1 2023 George Town, Penang (Part 2)

Day 2 Friday Oct 1 2023 (Part 2) - after the Ayer Itam, Kek Lok Si Temple & Balik Pulau visits, our group spent the rest of the afternoon visiting various UNESCO World Heritage sites & touristy places in downtown George Town area. As for me, it was a down the memory lane visit having visited Penang 2 to 3 times in recent years !  

1) Esplanade, George Town, Penang - the waterfront Esplanade features historical landmarks such as the Cenotaph war memorial, Fort Cornwallis, scenic promenades & access to several museums of art & culture, architectural gems include Penang City Hall which combines Edwardian Baroque & Palladian styles, cafes, restaurants & bars & a handful of hotels , the ferry port offers trips to Butterworth & Langkawi island. 


2) Fort Cornwallis, George Town, Penang - a bastion fort, built by the British East India Company in the late 18th century, named after the then Lieutenant General The 2nd Earl Cornwallis, the Governor General of Bengal at the time of the fort's construction, it is the largest standing fort in Malaysia ! 


3) Queen Victoria Memorial Tower, George Town, Penang - a monument to Queen Victoria in remembrance after her death, located at the Penang Chinese Recreation Club. 

4) Chaiya Mangalaram Thai Buddhist Temple, Lorong Burma, Pulau Tikus, George Town, Penang  - this Thai style Buddhist shrine is home to a huge reclining Buddha, mosaic dragons & other statutes. 

5) Yap Temple (Choo Chay Keong), corner of Lebuh Cannon & Lebuh Armenian, George Town, Penang - built in 1924 and dedicated to the God of Prosperity, a clan temple of the Lum Yeong Tong Yap Kongsi 


6) Lebuh Armenian, George Town, Penang - the famous old street of George Town, tourist haven, very historic, street art, souvenirs shopping etc 


7) Walkabout in downtown George Town city centre, Penang - near Lebuh Queen, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, St George's Church, Penang State Museum & Georgetown Hotel, Jalan Larut area

8) The Top Penang - theme park & glass skywalk in a high tower, featuring rope trails, an aquarium & model dinosaurs


9) Prangin Mall, Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong, George Town, Penang


10) Group dinner in New World City Park Food Court - savoured an assorted variety of Penang style food ie lobak, yam rice, herbal pork rib soup, Thai fried rice, pork offal soup & pork leg black vinegar etc
