Malaysia (Covid-19 National Recovery Phase 4 - My Cuti Cuti Malaysia No 25 to George Town, Penang - UNESCO) Jan 10 -14 2022 Day 4 - Part 4

 

My Jalan Jalan (Walkabout) & Makan Makan (Small Eat) on Day 4 (Thursday Jan 13 2022) focusing our group's visit from Chulia Heritage Hotel (morning walk) & Armenian Street Heritage Hotel (evening walk) to major heritage sites in UNESCO Core Zone, George Town, Penang Island.

UNESCO Core Zone, George Town, Penang Island - the historic City of George Town covers an area of 109.38ha bounded by the Straits of Malacca on the north-eastern cape of Penang island, Lorong Love (Love Lane) to the north-west & Gat Lebuh Melayu, Lorong Carnarvon & Lebuh Carnavon to the south-west corner; there are more than 1,700 historic buildings within this Core Zone aligned on 4 main streets of Pengkalan Weld, Lebuh Pantai, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling & Lorong Love as well as several perpendicular streets of Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barabath, Lebuh Light, Lebuh Bishop, Lebuh Kereja, Lebuh China, Lebuh Pasar, Lebuh Chulia, Lebuh Armenian & Lebuh Acheh. 

Travel Highlights: 

1) Cheong Fatt Tze (The Blue Mansion), Lebuh Leith, George Town, Penang - the most iconic boutique heritage hotel in Georgetown, built before the turn of 20th century by Cheong Fatt Tze, a Chinese courtyard style mansion, Hakka / Teochew architectural styles, visitors can also pay a fee (admission fee Rm25=US$5.90 Friday>Sunday,11.00>14.00) to join daytime tours of its public area. 



2) Eastern & Oriental (E & O) Hotel, Lebuh Farquhar, George Town, Penang - established by Sarkies Brothers in 1885, "the premier hotel east of the Suez", the only hotel in the heart of historic George Town possessing prime sea front !  


3) St Xavier's Institution (1852), Lebuh Farquhar, George Town, Penang - 
the oldest Lasallian school in South East Asia & the Catholic Lasallian school in Malaysia, while it has a history dating back to 1787, the present day institution, named after St Francis Xavier, was only established in 1852.


4) Convent Light Street, George Town, Penang - the oldest girl's school in Southeast Asia, founded by French Catholic nuns in 1852, one of the most highy regarded missionary school on Penang island. 


5) Jalan Green Hall, George Town, Penang - trading centre for salt during the old days, populated by Tamils then, old buildings renovated & the area is now the stocks & securities centre !

11) Centoaph (1929), Jalan Padang Lama, George Town, Penang - a war memorial dedicated to the fallen Allied soldiers of World War 1.  


12) Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama), George Town, Penang - the waterfront Esplanade features historical landmarks such as the Cenotaph war memorial & Fort Cornwallis, scenic promenades & access to several museums of art & culture, architectural gems include Penang City Hall, which combines Edwardian Baroque & Palladian styles, cafes, restaurants, bars & hotels dot the area, the ferry port offers trips to Butterworth & Langkawi Island.

15) Wu Clan Associations, Lebuh King, Geogre Town, Penang - built by Toi Shan Association. 


16) Ninyong Hui Kwon (Clan Association) & Temple, Lebuh King, George Town, Penang - built in 1912-1913 by Toi San Association. 


17) Wu Ti Meow (War Emperor Temple), Lebuh King, Penang - dates back to 1830, belongs to Toi San Association


18) Fook Teik Chinese Temple, Lebuh King, George Town, Penang


19) Heong San Wooi Koon (Clan Association), Lebuh King, George Town, Penang - a Cantonese district association from Heong Shan district now Guangdong Province in southern China, built in 1870s.

29) Fort Cornwallis Light House, George Town, Penang - under the management of Maritime Authority of Malaysia.


30) Fort Cornwallis, George Town, Penang - a bastion fort built by the British East India Company in the late 18th century, the largest standing fort in Malaysia, it never engaged in combat during its operating history.
