Day 4 Monday Nov 18 2024 (Colombo, Sri Lanka) - my final day in Sri Lanka, using local bus transport, we made our first visit to Crow Island Beach Park, AL-Masjid AL Jamiul Alfar (Red Mosque) & Independence Memorial Hall.

(7km), Colombo, Sri Lanka  

1) The start of my bus ride from our hotel to 1st Cross Street, Colombo (near Fort Railway station) to visit Crow Island Beach, a suburb about 7km from Colombo city.  


2) Bus ride from a Main Street bus stop (off 1st Cross Street corner) > Crow Island Beach passing the Colombo Port & St Anthony Shrine along New Negombo Road. 


3) Muhiyadeem Jumma Masjid, Vystwyke Rd, Modara, Colombo, Sri Lanka 


4) Downtown Modara & Sea Beach Road Junction  > Crow Island Beach Park - a short walk of 1km.


5) Arriving in Crow Island Beach Park - situated on the shores of Indian Ocean, the only coastal wetland in Colombo District, a public recreational park, this place used to be an abode for crows due to the presence of dump waste but in recent years, the local council has spruced & cleaned up the place to make it more pleasant for public to visit !  


6) Bus ride (return journey) from Sea Beach Road / Modara Junction > 1st Cross Street, Colombo, Sri Lanka 


7) AL-Masjid AL Jamiul Alfar (Red Mosque) - built in 1908 during British rule, located on 2nd Cross Street in Pettah, the mosque is one of the oldest mosque in Colombo & a popular tourist site in the city, the red & white stripe historic building looks very attractive, joined a guided tour of the mosque, gained a better understanding of the mosque history, the architecture & the inner mosque design etc. 


8) Pettah Market (1st & 2nd Cross Street), Colombo, Sri Lanka - a shopper's paradise, dominated by commercial shop lots & petty traders selling all sort of wares from A to Z ! 


9) Colombo Private Bus Stand, Sri Lanka  


10) Colombo Airport Bus Stand, Sri Lanka - a preliminary visit as both of us will be taking an airport shuttle bus to Bandaranaike International Airport tomorrow. 


11) Bus ride from Fort Railway station to my hotel for a rest !


12) Small Eat - a vegetable lunch in a nearby eatery stall in downtown Colombo. 


13) Bus ride from my hotel to Independence Memorial Hall, Colombo, Sri Lanka 


14) Independence Memorial Hall, Colombo, Sri Lanka - a national monument in Sri Lanka built for commemoration of the Independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule with the restoration of full governing responsibility to a Ceylonese elected legislature on Feb 4 1948, located in the Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, it also house the Independence Memorial Museum (basement)


15) The Arcade Independence Square, Colombo, Sri Lanka - a legacy of Sri Lanka's colonial past, was used in different capacities & was hidden from sight for many years, it was since been restored by Sri Lanka Armed Force as part of the initiatives to preserve & rejuvenate historic buildings in Colombo under the  auspices of the "Mahinda Chintana"; now a shopping complex in Colombo, Sri Lanka, housed in group of renovated buildings including the former Jawatta Lunatic Asylum & the former Western Provincial Council Building. 


16) Sri Lanka Foundation, SSC Sinhalese Sports Club, Cricket & Hockey Ground, National Library, Independence Avenue, Colombo, Sri Lanka, both cricket & hockey are Sri Lankan's favourite sport & over the years, the country had won worldwide fame in these two sports !
