My 1st Visit to Chennai Tamil Nadu |
Day 15 Thursday Nov 28 2024 (Final Day 3 - Mahabalipuram & Day 1 - Chennai, Tamil Nadu) - after a fruitful visit in Mahabalipuram despite a rainy spell caused by a looming cyclone Fengal in our 2 nights stay in Mahabalipuram, today is my last day in Mahabalipuram so we took it easy & went for a morning walk to a beach nearby our hotel prior to taking a bus from a Bypass ECR bus stop located by the side of a main trunk road heading towards Chennai.

1) A morning stroll on a beach in Mahabalipuram nearby our hotel prior to our complimentary breakfast (08.00). Local residents on a red alert after experiencing heavy rainfall & strong wind during the last two days caused by a looming Cyclone Fengal heading towards coastal cities in Tamil Nadu in the days ahead !
2) Taking an auto rickshaw ride (Rs100 = Rm5.40) from our hotel to a Bypass on a main trunk road to board a bus heading to Chennai, my next city of visit.
3) Arriving at the Chennai Central Railway Bus Stand & an auto rickshaw ride (Rs100) to BHIMAS Inn, 700m from the Central Railway station.
4) Hotel Accommodation: our 2 nights stay in BHIMAS Inn, Chennai, room tariff Rs1590 = Rm86 = US19.50, twin sharing per night.
5) After the hotel check-in, we took a walk from the hotel to the Central Square near the Chennai Central Railway station to explore the historic places in that vicinity.
6) Trinity Chapel (1831), Chennai, Tamil Nadu
7) Food stalls, eateries etc - street food & local restaurants aplenty !
8) Chennai Central Railway Station (1873), Tamil Nadu - built in 1873 in the Gothic Revival style by British architect George Harding, later modified by Robert Chisholm who added the central clock tower & Travancore caps on the main tower, today this magnificent looking colonial railway station serves over 350,000 passengers daily.
9) M G Ramachandran Central Metro, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - you could consider using the Chennai Metro Network or Urban Rail System to move around various places of interest in downtown Chennai eg High Court, Egmore, Government Estate, Mannadi, Chennai Fort etc
10) Victoria Public Hall (1888), Evr Salai, Park Town, Chennai, Kannappar Thidal, Poongavanapuram, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - a historical building named after Victoria, Empree of India, one of the fine examples of British architecture in Chennai & was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
11) Ripon Building, Raja Muthiah Rd, Periamet, Kannappar Thidal, Poongavanapuram, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - the seat & HQ of the Greater Chennai Corporation, a local government for the City of Chennai in the Chennai Metropolitan Area of Tamil Nadu, this all-white structure building is an example of neoclassical architecture, a combination of ionic & Corinthian styles, opened in 1913.
12) An iconic & historic building (name unknown), opposite the Chennai Central Railway Station
13) Central Square, near the Chennai Central Railway station, Chennai, Tamil Nadu
14) Rajah Sir Ramasamy Mudeliar Choultry (1888), Poongavanapuram, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - a heritage building now owned by Chennai Metro Rail.
15) A bus stop next to the Central Square - all MTC buses towards Broadway stop here !
16) Southern Railway HQ Administrative Building (1921), Parktown, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - an indo-Saracenic structure loacted adjacent to the Chennai Central Railway Station on Poonamallee High Raod.
17) Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Grand Southern Trunk Road, near Park Town, Chennai, Tamil Nadu
18) Moore Market, 3 Elephant Gate Bridge Road, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - Chennai's 126 years old market, a flea market selling all sorts of goods ie antiques, old coins, telescopes, books, second hand goods etc
19) Jawarlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - a side visit along the flea market - a multi-purpose stadium in Chennai, located at Sydenhams Road in Park Town besides the Chennai Central Suburban railway station, it has a capacity of 40,000.
20) My Lady's Garden, Periamet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - one of the oldest park in Chennai, once a People's Park, it was developed by Governor Charles Trevelyan in his brief tenure in 1859 > 1860, now a small park of 5 acres, a surviving landmark in Chennai !
21) Exiting My Lady's Garden & took a slow walk towards the Chennai Central Railway station on our way back to our hotel, bought a pack of Iranian Biryani chicken (Rs130 = Rm7) as our dinner of the night !
