India & Sri Lanka (Post Covid Overseas Visit No 12 - My 24 days in Southern India & Sri Lanka Nov 14 > Dec 7 2024) Day 8 - Nov 21 2024 (Day 3 - Kochi)

Day 8 Thursday Nov 21 2024 (Kochi, Kerala) - my final day in Kochi, spent the day visiting Fort Emmanuel / Kochi Fort & Beach, both the Jew Town & Kochi Synagogue visits impressed me a lot & a rewarding one !  

1) Bastian Homestay, K.B. Jacob Road, Chirattapalam. Kochi, Kerala - my 4 nights stay in Kochi, room tariff Rs900 = Rm49 = US$11) twin sharing. 


2) Boilers - steam boilers of the cranes used in Cochin Dry Dock for 20 years from 1956, it used coke, coal & fire wood as fuel. 



3) Fort Emmanuel, Kochi, Kerala - a ruined fort located at Fort Kochi, it was a bastion of the Portuguese & a symbol of the strategic alliance between the Maharaja of Kochi & the Kingdom of Portugal. 


4) Chinese Fishing Nets, Fort Kochi, Kerala - known as Cheenavala in Malayalam, these giant, iconic Chinese style fishing nets suspended from tall bamboo frames was believed to have been introduced in Kochi by Chinese explorer, Zheng He, China between 1350 > 1450 AD.

6) Open Air Theatre / Folklore Cultural Theatre, Koch, Kerala  



7) Marina Restaurant & commercial ferry jetty, Kochi, Kerala


8) Aspin Wall, Kochi, Kerala - named after businessman Aspinwall, the house is located near the waterfront of Fort Kochi, it stands out because of its size & white colour, houses contemporary art & art events; understand from locals the place is temporary closed hence could only viewed from the outside gate !   




9) Kochi Bus Stand - took a local bus from here to a nearest bus stop in Jew Town 


10) Jew Town, Kochi, Kerala - a historic Jew town located in the heart of the once-thriving Cochin Jewish community & known for its old-world charm & 16th century Paradesi Synagogue, quaint shops around Synagogue Lane & Jew Town Road sell antiques, carving & vintage collectibles, along with Keralan crafts, aromatic spices, laid back outdoor cafes & artsy eateries in heritage buildings serve local specialties & western fare. 


11) Paradesi Synagogue, Kochi, Kerala - the Jewish synagogue (traditional house of worship of the Cochin Jews) was built in 1568, almost 1500 years after the beginning of the Jewish connection with Kerala, it was built on the land adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace, given by the erstwhile king of Cochin; the synagogue, the oldest in the Commonwealth was built by the Jewish community of Cochin, in 1662, it was destroyed by the Portuguese & then reconstructed two years later by the Dutch, an interesting pictorial presentations of first  landing of Jews at Singly in 72 C.E. ! Admission fee Rs10 = Rm0.50).

13) Chirattappalam Bus Stop, Kochi - nearest bus stop to Bastian Homestay. 


14) Small Eat - our lunch in a local eatery stall nearby our Bastian Homestay ie chicken biryani (Rs120 = Rm6.50) serving one of the best chicken biryani in town !


Friday Nov 22 2024 (Salem, Tamil Nadu) - departed Kochi, Kerala by train (09.10) from the Kochi Railway Station > Salem Junction (arriving 16.30, a brief evening stopover & hotel stay of 6 hours) & then by sleeper bus the following early morning (01.30) > Puducherry - a long & hardy day indeed !


1) Small Eat - morning breakfast in a local restaurant next to the Kochi Railway Station 


2) Train ride from Kochi Railway Station (09.10) > Salem Junction 


3) Countryside scenery of Tamil Nadu as viewed from the moving train's windows 


4) Countryside scenery from Kochi > Salem, Tamil Nadu 


5) Arriving in Salem Junction Railway Station (16.30, a delay of 1 hour)


6) Hotel Accommodation: our brief one night stay (6 hours ) in YMCA  Hotel, Salem; check out at midnight & took an auto rickshaw (Rs300 = Rm16) to a By Pass bus stop off the Salem highway to board a sleeper bus (01.30) to Puducherry, our next destination.
