Day 12 Monday Nov 25 2024 (Puducherry, Union Territory) - my Day 3 in Puducherry & by now we are getting more familiar with places in the city centre & the oceanfront; after a morning walk to Goulbert Market & a breakfast, we took an auto rickshaw to Pondy Beach area.
1) Walkabout in downtown Puducherry, Goulbert market & Petit Canal Street.
2) Petit Canal Street & a wall mural, Puducherry, Union Territory
3) Goulbert Market, 131, Big Market, Puducherry, Union Territory - locally known as Periya Kadai, in Tamil means Big Store, busy busy in the morning seeing locals going around the market shopping for fresh produce, meat, dried goods & groceries etc
4) A "fashion" parade of fresh produce in Morning Market - neat & clean looking !
5) Trays of deep fried food on display & sale in a local restaurant - freshly cooked, so go for these finger food local Indians love !
6) My complimentary breakfast eaten in the comfort of the hotel's reception room !
7) Auto rickshaw ride (Rs100 = Rm5.40) from downtown Puducherry > Pondy Beach (2.1km)
8) Pondy Marinaa Eco Beach, Puducherry, Union Territory - a stunning promenade that runs along the Bay of Bengal, offering breathtaking views of the ocean, a new attraction for tourists !
9) Pondy Marinaa & Marinaa Food Court Shops, Dubrayapet near New Light House, Puducherry, Union Territory - quiet during the morning session, best time of visit is in the evening when all the eatery stalls in the Food Court open & the neon light is on, an ideal place to watch sunrise / sunset & take a leisure boat ride to the river mouth ! Joyland Amusement Park is just next door; enjoyed my time in Pondy Marinaa especially the sea breeze, light wind that blows from the Bay of Bengal, very refreshing & relaxing here !
10) Pondy Marina Boat House, Puducherry, Union Territory - offer evening boat rides (after 16.00) to watch to 4 major sites ie mangrove forest, Pondy fishing harbour, river mouth & the ancient site of Arikamedu; although we did not take the boat ride, it was an interesting visit, we saw fishing boats, mangrove trees, new mangrove seedlings & enjoyed the ambience & the surrounding environment.
11) Pondicherry Lighthouse, Puducherry, Union Territory - Pondicherry Lighthouse is a central government institution & under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, providing navigational aids to the mariners. The Old Lighthouse was constructed in Pondicherry in the 19th century by the French rulers.

13) A slow walk from the New Lighthouse (2.0km) to White Town, downtown Puducherry.
14) French Institute of Pondicherry UMIFRE 21, St Louis Street, White Town, Puducherry, Union Territory - founded in 1955, a French research centre in Puducherry under the joint supervision of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs & the French National Centre for Scientific Research, it is the largest of the 26 research centres under this dual umbrella, external visit only.
15) Rock Beach, Puducherry, Union Territory - a popular stretch of beachfront in Puducherry city, along the Bay of Bengal, a 1.2km long stretch starting from War Memorial & end at Duplex Park on the Goubert Avenue; spent an hour of our leisure time here siting on a bench facing the Bay of Bengal, enjoying the sea breeze, watching visitors / tourists taking a stroll on the beach, munching a packet of chick peas which we bought from a local confectionery stall ...... what an evening for two Malaysian travellers eager to explore & find out more about this city once upon a time a French colonial settlement in India until 1954 ! Bought a few varieties of snacks (Rs100 = Rm5.40) from a sweet & confectionery shop on our way back to the hotel.
