Day 2 Sunday May 14 2023 Surabaya, Java Part 1 - a sunny day in Surabaya, not super hot (32 / 25C) so the weather was fine for my Jalan Jalan (Walkabout) in this port city in Java island, an exciting long day awaiting us given that it was my first time visit to Surabaya & my travel buddy too ! After the post-Covid 19 pandemic, I would try to seize every travel opportunity (if budget permits) comes my way (being a senior citizen & in my early 70s) & show up in any city or country I have yet to visit or re-visit as long as I am still able & healthy like my Good Old Days after my retirement in 2006 !
Surabaya, East Java - a port city in Java island, a vibrant, sprawling metropolis, the urban landscape has a mix of modern skyscrappers with canals & buildings from its Dutch colonial past, it has a thriving Chinatown & an Arab Quarter whose Ampel mosque dating back to 15th century, the Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument) honors the independence battle waged in Surabaya's streets in 1945 !
1) Enjoying my complimentary breakfast with my travel buddy in our hotel (Varna Culture Hotel, Surabaya), a good selection of Indonesian buffet style food & drinks to savour !
2) The start of my Jalan Jalan (Walkabout) from our hotel in Jalan Tunjungan to major touristy places in & around Surabaya city after our arrival yesterday afternoon from Kuala Lumpur.
3) Masjid Muhammad Cheng Hoo, Gading street, Surabaya, Java - officially AI Islam Muhammad Cheng Hoo Siriwijaya Palembang Mosque dedicated for Muslim Chinese people located in Jakabaring Palembang, South Sumatra, the name of the mosque is in honor to the acclaimed Muslim Chinese Admiral Zheng He, the mosque was founded by the initiatives of the elders, advisers, administrators of the Chinese Islamic Association of Indonesia of South Sumatra as well as Chinese community leaders around Palembang.

7) Hotel Majapahit (Hotel Oranje), Surabaya, Java - a historic hotel, opened in 1911 currently managed by Accor.

9) Continuing my walk towards Surabaya Kota train station & Atom Mall
10) Surabaya Kota Train Station - opened in 1878, first train station owned by Dutch East Indies Company, favorably known as Semut station by the locals, located in Bongkaran, Pabean Cantikan, Surabaya, East Java
