Taiwan (Post Covid-19 Overseas Visit No 8 - My 20 days Free & Easy Visit to Taiwan) Day 5 - Ruifeng & Keelung,Taiwan (March 11 2024)

Day 5 March 11 2024 Monday (Ruifang & Keelung) - after staying for 2 nights in Ruifang, my next destination is Keelung, a port city near Taipei. A wet day awaiting us in Keelung - drizzling in the late afternoon & evening so making outing a bit messy ! 

1) Early morning walk in downtown Ruifang prior to our train departure to Keelung. 


2) Bought 2 takeaway packs of fried rice & mihoon (NT$50 x 2 = NT$100 = Rm15, takeaway) as breakfast (eaten in our hotel) from a morning market in downtown Ruifang & pastries totalled NT$62 (Rm9.30) as finger food / snacks.

3) Walkabout in Ruifang Old Street, New Taipei City - a long old street extending out of Ruifang Train Station.


4) Old pictures promoting major touristy places on display in Ruifang train station ie Jiufen, Shifen, Houtong Cat Village Yehliu Geopark & Keelung ...... sentimental feeling abound for those who had left their footprints in these quaint village towns of yesteryears ! 


5) Ruifang Train Staion, New Taipei City - a quiet village town ideal for a good night stay & visits to Houtong, Shifen, Pingxi & Jiufen ! 


6) TRA train ride (departing 10.47) from Ruifang Station > Keelung Station 


Day 5 March 11 2024 (Keelung, Taiwan) - my 1st day in Keelung but greeted by a wet spell so our walkabout in downtown Keelung was a messy one ! My last visit to Keelung was in Nov 2004 !  

Keelung City - a port near Taipei in northern Taiwan, surrounded by mountains, it's known for its sheltered harbor, near the waterfront, street food stalls at Miaokou Night Market offer traditional snacks & seafood, several forts around the area include hilltop Ershawan Fort with cannons & Chinese-style gate, both Gongzi Liao Fort & Dawulun Fort offer views over the harbor & ocean.  

1) Keelung Train Station 


2) Qingan Temple - in downtown Keelung, a 5 minutes walk from Maritime Plaza. 


3) Ren'ai Market & the surrounding, Keelung City - traditional seafood / meat / fresh fruit & vegetable market, popular with local people, upstairs a food court, a short walk from Yung Feng Hotel (100m) 


4) Hotel Accommodation: our group's 2 nights stay in Yung Feng Hotel, Keelung; room tariff NT$985 = Rm148 (twin sharing) per night, hotel check in time 15.00 (left luggage in hotel reception due to our early arrival)   


5) Walkabout in downtown Keelung after the hotel check-in, it was a wet wet afternoon & extended to evening & night ! So our group was "quarantined" in the hotel throughout the night ! 


6) Lunch in a newly opened Cantonese-style restaurant in downtown Keelung - both my wife & myself savoured a plate each of roasted pork / duck / chicken + vegetables + hot soup (free) + totalled NT95 X 2 = NT$190 (Rm28.50) - fully satisfied with the food served here ! 


7) After the lunch, our group made a visit to Chenghuang Temple, Maritime Plaza & Keelung E Square Mall before returning to Yung Feng Hotel for check-in (15.00)

9) Maritime Plaza, Keelung - opened in 2009, a wide, waterside square, popular for cruise ship spotting, evening strolls & views of the city. 


10) E Square Mall & the surrounding, Keelung - a modern shopping mall. 


11) Zhongzheng Park, Keelung - located in Xinyi & Zhongzheng District of Keelung City (built on the hillside of Keelung Port), the park traces its history to 1933 during the Japanese rule of Taiwan, the major tourist attractions here are Keelung Martyrs Shrine (under renovation),  Grand Buddha & Guang Yin Temple, Zhupu Altar & Keelung Tower. 


12) Keelung Martyrs Shrine, Xin'er Road, Zhongzheng District, Keelung - the main hall currently under renovation. 


13) Grand Buddha Temple, Keelung - located on upper Zhongzheng Park, visitors can view the whole scene of Keelung from the square ! 




14) Chupi Altar (Keelung Mid-Summer Ghost Festival Museum, Zhongzheng Park, Keelung - the main venue for ceremony of salvation during Keelung Ghost Festival; dating back to 1851, on the 12th day of the 7th lunar month, Taoist exorcism  take place & lamps on the Chupu Altar are lit, casting spectacular rays of colored lights across the city. 


15) Keelung Tower - closed on Monday ! A 60m toll tower, provides a 360 degree view of Keelung City ! 


16) Walkabout from the Zhongzheng Park > Yung Feng Hotel 


17) Miaokuo Night Market, Keelung - bustling, open air market with many stalls serving Taiwanese street food, snacks & sweets etc. A short walk from Yung Feng Hotel 


18) Dinner with my wife in Miaokuo Night Market, savoured 2 bowls of braised pork rice NT$35 x 2 + pork meat soup NT$70 totalled NT$130 = Rm19.50 for sharing of 2.
