Day 1 March 7 2024 Thursday (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia & Taipei, Taiwan) - my 1st day in Taipei after a lapse of 20 years since my last visit to Taiwan in Nov 2004 ! Having done the macro & micro planning for this 20 days free & easy Taiwan trip, our group is looking forward to look at Taiwan as much as possible through our own lens - the best is yet to come !
1) Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 2 - taking a Air Asia flight (Rm470 = US$99) from Kuala Lumpur > Taoyuan International Airport (09.35 > 14.25).
2) Arriving (14.30) in Taoyuan International Airport - next is immigration, health, security clearance & luggage collection ! Strict checks on meat-based products especially pork sausages (prohibited item) & if you have these products in your luggage, suggest surrender them to the health officials otherwise a hefty fine will be imposed on you ! I noticed Taiwan Sim Cards sold at the airport were much higher (maybe be more data usage) compared to what my travel buddy bought for me in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur (a basic 10 day Taiwan sim card in KL costs Rm26 = NT$173 !)
2) Airport link from Taoyuan International Airport > Taoyuan Airport MRT station
3) Each of our group member bought a Taiwan EasyCard (initial payment of NT$500 = Rm75 to pay for our first HSR & Metro train rides from the airport to Taipei Main Station, Ximen station & subsequent use) from a ezfly service counter booth located before the Airport MRT. This smart card will be highly useful for payment on the Taipei Metro, buses & other public transport services (at a discounted rate) in Taipei including other cities in Taiwan as well as buying of things in Family Mart & &-Eleven stores throughout our stay in Taiwan !
4) Exiting the Taoyuan International Airport > Taoyuan HSR Station for a HSR train ride to Taipei Main Station (using a EasyCard) to pay for the train journey.
5) Exiting the Ximen Metro station > a short walk to New World Hotel passing by the commercial district of Chengdu Road, Wanhua District, Taipei
6) Hotel Accommodation: my first 2 nights stay in Taipei ie New World Hotel, Kunming Street, Ximending, room tariff NT$1.412 (Rm212, twin sharing) per night. Upon our return from Ruifang & Keelung, our group returned to Taipei & stayed in a different hotel for 3 more nights.
7) Evening walk from New World Hotel > Ximending Night Market to get a feel of the nightlife in Taipei City !
9) Early dinner in a fish ball noodle restaurant near New World Hotel, Kunming Road, Taipei City; savoured a bowl of braised pork rice (NT$40 = Rm6) & a bowl of Fu Chow fish ball noodle soup (NT$70 = Rm10.50), my 1st taste of Taiwanese food !
8) Bought xiaolongbao (5 pieces NT$60 = Rm9) & ate as a snack at a street food stall in Ximending Night Market !
