Day-13 Friday Aug 21 2026 (Jiadengyu & Kanas National Geopark) - my 2nd day in Jiadengyu, encountered a gloomy weather & intermittent rain for our Kanas National Geopark visit today but these did not dampen our spirit as both of us managed well (exercising caution while walking uphill & downhill, putting on our raincoat & carrying an umbrella etc) & visited the Fish Viewing Platform, Kanas Lake, Wolong & Moon Bay. A fruitful outcome despite the odds we faced visiting the Kanas National Geopark today !

1) My DIY egg noodle soup with pork sausages / bitter gourd as breakfast eaten in the comfort of my hotel in Jiadengyu. Gloomy weather this morning, temperature dropped to 6c last night so this simple, no frill DIY breakfast really warmed my heart !
2) Despite the cold weather & a wet morning, I ventured out & took some nice pictures of the Altay mountain scenery & the quiet surrounding, most people were still in deep slumber at this time (07.45) of the day !
3) Despite the gloomy weather, we took a free Kanas shuttle bus nearby our hotel to Jiadengyu Kanas Tourist Service Center to kick start our day visit to Kanas National Geopark (my last visit was in May 2006) & a long day awaiting for both of us as we will be visiting the Fish Viewing Platform, Kanas Lake, Wolong Bay, Moon Bay & the Fairy Bay - all these fairly tale & touristy places are a must visit when in Kanas ! Free admission for seniors above 70+ (KM smiled again !), shuttle bus ticket CNY35 (50% discount for seniors). Needles to say, my travel buddy aged 63 paid a little bit more but still enjoyed some discount for entrance & shuttle bus tickets purchase ! If you want a free lunch for entries to all the 5As tourist attractions in China, just wait for your age to turn 70 ......
4) Queuing to board a Kanas shuttle bus to the Kanas Tourist Service Centre for a transit ride to the Fish Viewing Platform, the best is yet to come !
5) Beauty, Beauty & Incredible Beauty ! What a refreshing re-visit for me to show up & walk the path one more time (down the memory lane) & standing tall again at the Fish Viewing Platform of the Kanas National Geopark, Xinjiang, rewinding the clock back to the Good Old Days of my Kanas visit in May 2006 & now Aug 2026 - time & tide really wait for no man, turning a second dream into a reality for some people, this could be a tall order !
6) We were on the right track / platform, about to board a Kanas shuttle bus heading to the Fish Viewing Platform, Kanas National Geopark.
7) The Fish Viewing Platform (Guanyu Pavilion) - the start of my uphill climb (via wooden stairs) together with my travel buddy to the Fish Viewing Platform, over 1,000 stairs, so take your time as you inch your way up to the higher ground, the views from the mountain top are simply awesome & stunning !
8) On top of the world - the Fish Viewing Platform (Guanyutai), the best vantage point in Kanas National Geopark, it sits high up on the summit of Camel Peak at an altitude of 2,030m, offering a breath-taking "God's Eye|" panoramic view of three-quarters of the mystical, colour-changing Kanas Lake.

10) The 1,068-Step Challenge - to reach the platform from the drop-off station, you have to walk up 1,068 wooden steps, (if drizzling, the steps can be wet & slippery); as you climb, the surrounding Taiga forest, snow capped peaks & winding rivers slowly revealed themselves, there are several viewing spots & benches to rest & catch your breath along the way !
11) The tortoise-colour Kanas Lake (changing color season to season) showing majestically in front of you !
12) The start of my downhill slow & steady walk from the Fish Viewing Platform to the base (starting point) due to a wet weather.
13) Kanas shuttle bus ride from the Fish Viewing Platform drop off station > Kanas Lake passing by a Tuva settlement.
14) Kanas Lake, Kanas National Geopark, Xinjiang - a stunning deep alpine freshwater lake nestled in the Altai Mountains of Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, maximum depth 188m at 1,375m high, visitors can climb over 1,000 stairs to the Fish Viewing Platform for a panoramic view of the Lake & Friendship Peak; heavy rain & strong winds at the time of our arrival, my shoes & jeans were wet to skins but well worth the visit as we stood on the Kanas Lake boat jetty platform staring hard at this magnificent lake during the late summer month !
15) Bye bye to Kanas Lake & boarding a Kanas shuttle bus to Kanas Tourist Service Centre for a transit ride to Wolong Bay, Moon Bay & Fairy Bay, the last leg of our day visit in Kanas National Geopark. So far so good despite a gloomy wet weather !

18) Queuing & boarding for a Kanas shuttle bus to visit the last leg of our day tour to Wolong Bay, Moon Bay & The Fairy Bay, the 3 famous "Musketeers" bays in Kanas National Geopark !
19) Wolong Bay (Dragon Crouching Bay), Kanas Lake - located about 11km south of Kanas Lake, Wolong Bay is one of the three symbolic bays & shooting sites in the geopark, tourists recognize it as the tyrannosaurus-like shoal in the green water, but locals call it Kazan Lake or Goudi Lake, named after its outline of the bottom of a pan !
20) Moon Bay, Kanas Lake, Xinjiang - most famous scenic spot, Kanas River continues to flow northward through a valley & forms a half-moon, Moon Bay is about 1.5km hiking distance from Wolong Bay; both of us were over the moon when we trained our eyes on this beautiful bay & I had to rely on my travel buddy to take a few pictures from a viewing platform as my mobile phone's battery was completely flat & I forgot to bring along a power band. Boon, thank you for your contributions of beautiful pictures taken in Moon Bay .... from now on till this evening, my mobile phone will be in sleeping mode & will be back to normal again after fully charged tonight ! KM, sleep well & a better day awaits you when you visit the Hemu Village tomorrow !
