Train ride (06.30 > 10.32) Sungai Golok > Hat Yai |
Day 10 Tuesday 30 June 2026 (Sungai Golok & Hat Yai) - after an overnight stay in Sungai Golok town, it was time to say bye bye to Sungai Golok, a "cowboy" town in the far far south of Bangkok & close to the northern states of Peninsula Malaysia. Thanks god, I returned safely to Hat Yai despite a bomb blast which injured 2 Malaysians while travelling on a sport utility vehicle in Phrai Wan, Tak Bai District, Narathiwat Province on June 29 (this press media was reported in Star Newspaper on June 30 2026)
1) Sungai Golok town, Thailand in "sleeping mode" as we walked through the main streets of Golok Town during the early morning at 05.15 towards the Sungai Golok train station to catch a Thai train departing 06.30. The entire town was as quiet as a mouse (quieter than normal) ! 2 early "birds" trying to catch a worm (ealr morning train ride) & strive to breath fresh, cool morning air in Sungai Golok before the heat wave strikes !
2) Sungai Golok train station, Narathiwat, Thailand - the furthermost train station in southern Thailand !
3) A popular traditional non-airconditioned train favoured by locals, cheap & safe but pick an early morning train to ride to "escape" the heatwave !
4) Suburban & rural scenery as viewed from the moving train's windows from Sungai Golok > Hat Yai, brief stopovers in smaller train stations to pick up & drop off passengers.

5) Arriving in Hat Yai Junction, Thailand - after almost a 4 hour train ride from Sungai Golok, thus a mid Summer Night dream of mine has been fulfilled since my last visit to this southern Thai country town 40 years ago !
6) A 900m walk from Hat Yai Junction > Friendlytel Hotel
7) Lunch in a local Thai restaurant located opposite our hotel - each of us savoured a bowl of mixed pork / offal porridge (60bht) + fried dough (20bht).
8) After the lunch, we walked to Kim Yong Market to do our last minute shopping for goodies to take home ! My travel buddy bought 1/2 kilo of dried longans as for me, I just enjoyed the window shopping & bought a pack of mixed dried fruit (100bht). We also visited a Thai Temple near the Kim Yong Market.
9) Continued our walkabout in Downtown Hat Yai & Lee Garden Hotel & Plaza - mainly window shopping
10) Takeaway a pack of roasted chicken / yellow rice (90bht) as our dinner of the day - yummy yummy taste after I warmed it with my rice cooker in the hotel room !
