Malaysia & Indonesia (Post Covid Overseas Visit No 9 - Johor Bahru & Batam, Riau Island) July 28 > August 1 2024 (Day 2 - Johor Bahru)


Day 2 Monday July 29 2024 (Johor Bahru) - focusing on a familiarisation visit to Berjaya Waterfront Terminal for my impending ferry crossing to Batam Island tomorrow morning, spent the rest of my time visiting the historical & heritage places in Johor Bahru City Centre, Jalan Wong Ah Fook & Tan Hiok Nee, also a visit to Skyscape to have a panoramic view of the Johor Bahru skyline & Singapore Straits !   

1) Free shuttle bus service, Johor Bahru City - covering 16 places in Johor Bahru city - not sure how regular this free bus service but good to know of this free shuttle service ? 


2) Zero Kilometer (0 KM) of Peninsula Malaysia, Bandar Johor Bahru, Johor - Singapore is 23km from this milestone, Kuala Lumpur 368km, Kota Baru 689km & Bangkok 1,805km. 


3) Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) - the council which administrates Johor Bahru city centre & other areas of the Iskanadr Malaysia area in Johor, Malaysia, the agency is under Johor State Government. 


4) Johor Bahru High Court Building, Jalan Dato Onn, Johor Bahru - once known as the Johor Bahru Supreme Court, the building was designed by Stark & Neil Architect in 1928.  


5) Persatuan Hainan (Hainanese Clan Association), No 38, Jalan Ibrahim, Johor Bahru, Johor - the association was established by the local Hainanese community in 1881 & the building was acquired in 1902. 

6) Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum, 42 Jalan Ibrahim, Johor Bahru - showcasing the history of Chinese Immigrants in Johor Bahru, closed on Monday ! 


7) Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Street, Johor Bahru, Johor - a must visit, historical & cultural & rich heritage, food & pre- World War 11 old buildings etc 


8) Bought 2 takeaway packs of kueh (bite-sized snacks or cakes) ie assorted kueh (Rm7) & curry puff (Rm5) as my light lunch of the day !

9) Arulmigu Rajamariamman Devasthanam Temple, Johor Bahru, Johor - a Hindu temple, built in 1911, an iconic landmark, temple has 120 statues & 26 wall paintings. 


10) Rumah Ibadat Gurdwara Sahib, Jalan Trus, Johor Bahru - built in 1921, a place for Sikh community to worship.  


11) Johor Ancient Temple, Jalan Tuas, Johor Bahru - oldest temple, built in 1870, serves as a place of worship & a symbol of unity among the 5 Chinese dialect groups ie Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka & Hainan.

13) Took a city bus (T21) from JB Sentral > The Zone, approx 300m from Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal - a familiarisation visit & also in preparation for my ferry crossing from Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal > Batam tomorrow morning ! Also took the opportunity to visit the Sungei Stulang, Stulang Walk & the surrounding ! 


14) Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal, Jalan Stulang Laut, Johor Bahru - an integrated international hub in the capital of Johor, consists of a duty free zone, shopping mall, 4 star hotel & club & ferry terminal. 


15) Daily ferry tickets on sale at various Ticketing Counters in the Ferry Terminal (Level 2), as my hotel is in Nagoya area, Batam which is near the Batam Harbour Bay Ferry Terminal, I showed up in the following morning & buy a return ferry ticket (Rm183 = US$40) from the Harbour Bay Ticketing Counter - pretty straight forward ! Advance booking is not necessary during the normal non-peak season especially weekdays !  First ferry departing from Stulang Laut (Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal) > Batam Harbour Bay is 09.00 & to Batam Centre Point is 07.15 (more regular service, every 30 to 45 mins there is a departure) ! 


16) Stulang Laut Waterfront & The Zone (Bus Stop) area near Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal - enjoy the sea breeze & the scenic view nearby ! 


17) The Zone Bus Stop, approx 300m from the Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal, Jalan Stulang Laut, Johor Bahru, Bus No T21 passes The Zone bus stop & ends in JB Sentral. 


18) Skyscape (Level 34), Menara JLand, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Johor Bahru, Johor - 1st sky bridge in Johor, entrance fee for seniors Rm23 (US$5), normal adult Rm28. 


19) A panoramic view of Johor Bahru city & beyond (Singapore Straits & northern part of Singapore) from the 34th floor Observation Deck & glass bridge, opening hours 09.30 > 17.30.


20) Audio-visual mini theatre presentation on Johor socio-economic development & tourism activities & attractions, food etc


21) Panoramic view (rain or shine) of Johor Bahru city centre & northern part of Singapore from the second indoor observation point, visitors are able to enjoy VR devices for out of body experiences, indulge in interactive floor games etc. 


22) Window shopping (no dull moment) & Food Court visit in Komtar JBCC, City Centre, Johor Bahru, Johor 


23) City Bus No T10 from JB Sentral > Larkin Sentral (heading to Kota Tinggi Terminal), convenience to use this bus service if you are heading to Larkin Sentral for your return bus trip to Kuala Lumpur 




24) Window shopping in Johor Bahru City Square - another premier shopping mall for you to shop & shop till your last pennies ! 


25) Eateries & Food Stalls in Jalan Meldrum, Jalan Siu Chin & Jalan Wong Ah Fook, City Centre, Johor Bahru - here you can find Malaysian Malay, Chinese & Indian Kopitiam or cafe style food of your delight !  


26) The busy Jalan Wong Ah Fook in the CBD of Johor Bahru City Centre - a tourist haven ! 


27) Dinner in Restoran Huang Jia Kopitiam, off Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Johor Bahru, Johor - savoured a plate of economy mixed rice with vegetables Rm8.50 (US$1.85); after the dinner, I took a city bus (No T20 or T14) from JB Sentral > Hospital Columbia followed by a short walk to Hana Hotel thus ending my final night stay in Johor Bahru ! Tomorrow is a new day for me & looking forward to my visit to Batam Island, Indonesia !
