D-17 Tuesday Aug 25 2026 (Karamay, Xinjiang) - my 2nd day in Karamay, no major outstation visit today, focussed our day visit to the Karamay River Scenic Spot & enjoyed a lunch meal in a local restaurant nearby our hotel. In the evening after a good rest, I travelled solo & took public buses to New Silk Road Plaza & Square, Jixian Lu Pedestrian Street followed by a visit to Kelamayi No 1 Oil Well Monument - an impressive monument, historical, a national heritage site, the 1st discovery of oil in China, unique stainless steel dome shape & magnificent looking !
Public Transport: 1 DiDi ride (CNY9) + 5 town bus rides (CNY1 x 5)
1) Public bus ride (CNY1) from a bus stop nearest to our hotel to Kelamayi Railway Station to buy 2 highspeed train tickets (Kuytun > Yining @CNY30)
2) Public bus ride (CNY1) from Kelamayi Railway Station > Karamay Century Park / Karamay Riverfront Area.
3) Arriving in Karamay River Waterfront & Century Park Area, Xinjiang

4) Lunch (CNY32, fried egg rice & mushroom / chicken rice) with my travel buddy in a local restaurant in downtown Karamay
5) Public bus ride (CNY1, solo) to Chinese Rose Garden & Karamay No 1 Oil Well Monument - evening outing !
6) Karamay No 1 Oil Well Monument - a major historical landmark located at the intersection of Junggar Road & Youjian South Road in the Karamay District of Xinjiang, this monument marks the discovery well of China's first major oilfield, where oil & gas first started flowing on Oct 29, 1955; today, it is recognised as a national heritage site & the spiritual birthplace of the oil city ! The site is famous for its futuristic "Big Oil Bubble" sculpture, mirror-finished stainless steel domes that has drawn close comparisons to the famous Cloud Gate "The Bean" in Chicago !
