" Time is like a river, you don't touch the same water twice because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of your LIFE "
" My Staycation & Jalan Jalan (Walkabout) free & easy solo visit following a heritage trail to Medan Tuanku, Chow Kit & Sultan / Petaling Street (Chinatown), Kuala Lumpur on Saturday Oct 2 2021 (09.00>14.00) travelling by Rapid KL LRT, MRT & Monorel trains from SS15, Subang Jaya > KL Sentral (transit) > Medan Tuanku > Bukit Bintang > Pasar Seni & return; my 6th outdoor trip after a National Lockdown (Movement Control Order / Emergency) imposed by the Malaysian Government on May 6 2021 due to a spike in Covid-19 cases, a National Vaccination campaign is currently being implemented by the Malaysian Government (Phase 1 started in Feb 2021), Selangor (my home state) is now under the National Recovery Phase 3 (NRP3) starting Friday Oct 1 2021 which permits individuals with vaccination certificate or card for cross district travels, dine-in restaurants, hotel accommodation & homestay, outdoor sport & activities within the same state but not inter state travel "
Total expenses incurred (5 train rides): Rm7.50 (US$1.75, senior 50% discount), distance from Subang Jaya (my home place) > Medan Tuanku is approx 23km
The start of my 1st Rapid KL train ride from SS15, Subang Jaya > KL Sentral (Rm2.10 = US$0.49, senior 50% discount)
My 2nd Rapid KL train ride from Sentral Monorel station > Medan Tuanku Monorel Station (Rm1.70 = US$0.40, senior 50% discount)
1) Cityscape of Kuala Lumpur as viewed from the Rapid KL Monorel train
2) Quil City Mall, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Bandar Warisan, Kuala Lumpur - formerly Vision City & known as Bandar Wawasan is a partially completed integrated development project located along Jalan Sultan Ismail, close to Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpur, the Quil City Mall is now opened but not all the retail lots taken up ... quiet at the time of my visit at around 11.30 !
3) Laman Medan Tuanku - a major area in downtown Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Medan Tuanku & Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman are the primary roads in this area, Medan Tuanku borders Dang Wangi to the east & south and Chow Kit to the north
4) Loke Mansion, 39 Court @ Loke Mansion, No 273A, Jalan Medan Tuanku, Kuala Lumpur - this heritage building was built by a wealthy tin magnate / business tycoon & philanthropist Loke Yew (the richest man in British Malaya at the turn of the 20th century), took 12 years to complete from 1892, the present owner has restored the mansion to its former grandeur in 2006 ! As the gate was locked, I only had a glimpse of this heritage building from the outside, a well preserved old building for public to admire in the years ahead !
5) The Row, 22-64, Jalan Doraisamy, Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur - comprises 22 of the 1940s pre-war shop houses, previously known as the Asian Heritage Row, host to numerous dining & nightspots that offer European & local cuisine & live entertainment ....
6) The Heritage Hotel, 16, Jalan Kamunting, Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur
7) Restoran Yut Kee, No 1, Jalan Kamunting, Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur - oldest kopitiam (coffee shop) in Kuala Lumpur, serving traditional Hainanese cuisine for breakfast & lunch since 1928 ie chicken chop, toasted bread & eggs, beef noodles, curry chicken mihoon, roasted pork roll, kaya swiss rolls & marble (butter) cakes etc, observed no dine-ins but only served takeaways (tao bao); during the 1970s (my Good Old Days), my work place was within walking distance from Yut Kee, so together with a few of my colleagues, we often had our breakfast & lunch in this Hainanese kopitiam & also bought home a pack of either swiss roll or butter cake, fresh & yummy ! Reminiscing about the past gives you fond memories !
8) A mix of old heritage & modern high rise buildings operating in Chow Kit area ie hotels, eateries, retail & shopping malls etc
9) Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur - after the Medan Tuanku & Chow Kit visit, I took a Rapid KL Monorel from Medan Tuanku to Bukit Bintang station (my 3rd train ride Rm1.10 = US$0.26) & a brief stopover in Bukit Bintang; after that, I then boarded a Rapid KL MRT train (my 4th train ride Rm0.70 = US$0.16) from Bukit Bintang to Pasar Seni for a visit to Chinatown area, my final destination; Bukit Bintang is the shopping & entertainment district of Kuala Lumpur, many upscale shopping malls & fashion boutiques, al fresco bars & live music bars line the Changkat Bukit Bintang street, nearby you have the Alor Street with many side walk restaurants serving western & local food catering for the locals & foreign tourists (now very much lacking as international border has yet to open, probably in Dec 2021) !
My 4th Rapid KL MRT train ride (Rm0.70 = US$0.16) from Bukit Bintang > Pasar Seni
10) Chinatown (Sultan Street, Tun H S Lee, Petaling Street), Kuala Lumpur - my last destination before heading home, more visitors seen & cars on the roads compared to 3 weeks ago when I visited the Chinatown area after lifting of the inter-district travel ban .... many pre war buildings, old Chinese & Indian temples, backpacker hotels, eateries, food court, morning market, shopper's haven etc
11) Rex KL, Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur - a Rex-Theatre (built in 1947) converted to a community-based cultural & creative hub in downtown Kuala Lumpur, a down the memory lane for me as 50 years ago when I was in my early 20s, I enjoyed watching Chinese movies in this Rex Theatre, conveniently located near the old Klang Bus Stand (now Pasar Seni LRT station), I cherished My Good Old Days, sweet memories !
Home Sweet Home ! My 5th final Rapid KL LRT train ride (Rm1.90=US$0.45) from Pasar Seni > SS15, Subang Jaya, Selangor (13.15>14.00) - another productive Saturday weekend thus ending my approx 5 hours of heritage walk to Chow Kit, Medan Tuanku & Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur; seeing a fascinating Kuala Lumpur city from a historic perspective in the midst of a Covid-19 pandemic during the 3rd week of the National Recovery Phase 2 !
