Durians - the King of fruit is now in season in Malaysia ! Go for it if you have not tasted this "smell great" fruit, a favorite for locals ! You either love it or hate it - so you make the choice ! But no regret after your first bite or taste of this green thorny fruit. Durian is currently (July/August) sold in East Coast towns for Rm8 - Rm38 per kilo depending on the quality of the fruit or varieties eg D-24, Red Prawn, Musang King etc ! If you are a small eater, you could buy a pack of good quality Musang King durians (4-6 seeds) for Rm40 to Rm50 - expensive in layman's term ! But to the die hard durian lovers - who care about the price !
Hostel accommodations - online booking via Hostelworld or booking.com; despite the low season in Taman Negara, the hostel I stayed in Kuala Tahan was fully booked so pre-book your hostel in Kuala Tahan as this tourist attraction place is packed with backpackers & foreign tourists even at this time of the year ! The north east monsoon season starts in September - December so try to avoid the wet season if you plan to visit the National Park of Malaysia ! As for our hostel stays in Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu & Kota Bharu, there was only two of us in a 4 beds or 8 beds room so both of us had a quiet evening / night in these hostels all by ourselves !
A backpacker's dream ! A decent bed & food plus access to public transport are all we need for this free & easy trip in Peninsula Malaysia !
1) Taman Negara, Kuala Tahan, Pahang (1 night) - Wild Lodge Taman Negara Rm26 (US$6.25) dorm bed, fan, free coffee & tea !
2) Kuantan, Pahang (1 night) - Kuantan Backpackers Rm30 (US$7.20), aircond, free simple breakfast & drinking water
3) Sungei Lembing, Pahang - Country View Inn (homestay) - RM35 (US$8.40) per pax (Queen bed room for 2), shared bathroom, aircond, free drinking water

Another feather in my cap (I bought a new traver's hat for this trip) in the world of domestic travelling in my home country !
