Day 14 Wednesday Oct 23 2024 (Part 2) - Part 2 of this post covered my visits together with my wife (by Metro) to 3 major touristy places in Beijing ie Yonghegong (Lama Temple), Temple of Confucius / Imperial Collage Museum & Olympic Park (Bird's Nest & Water Cube) in Chaoyang District, Beijing; my last visit to these 3 popular touristy places in Beijing was in Oct 2009 !
Small Eat - Lunch (after my group's Summer Palace visit) in a food court near the Dongzhimen Metro station, savoured 2 dishes ie stir fried vegetables + braised pork ribs / yellow beans + rice = Rmb14 (US$1.95)
The Yonghe Temple (Yonghegong) is also known as Lama Temple belonging to the Gelug school of Teibetan Buddhism located on 12, Yonghegong Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing; built in 1694, the building & artwork of the temple is a combination of Han Chinese & Tibetan styles.
1) Metro train ride (15.00) from Dongzhimen > Yonghegong (Lama Temple) Line 2 or 5.

Beijing Temple of Confucius is the 2nd largest Confucian temple in China, after the one in Confucius's hometown of Qufu, Shandong (visited in Oct 2010), originally built in 1302 & used as a place for sacrifices to Confucius during the Yuan, Ming & Qing Dynasties; both Temple of Confucius & Guozijian (Imperial Collage) are located in the same area. Admission fee Rmb30 (US$4.10). No concession for senior citizens.
1) Da Cheng Gate, Temple of Confucius, Beijing - the 5 bay wide Da Cheng Gate features yellow tiles, upturned eaves, 3 openings & 3 parallel flights of hornless dragon-patterned steps leading to a raised platform enclosed by balusters, because of the 24 halberds displayed inside, it is also called the "Halberd Gate", an ancient Chinese weapon, the halberd is a long spear like weapon with an axe blade near the end.
2) Stone Steles (Dragon Carving), Temple of Confucius, Beijing - the temple houses more than 1,000 steles made of different time & precious objects such as Han Stone reliefs, carved pictures depicting the life of Confucius & the stone dragon carvings of the Ming & Qing dynasties.
3) The Beijing Guozijian (Imperial College Museum) is located on Guozijian Street in Beijing, it was China's national university during the Yuan, Ming & Qing dynasties & also the last Guozijian of China, most of the Beijing Guozijian's buildings were built during the Ming dynasty & it remains an important heritage site in China.
4) Stone Steles engraved with Name List of Jing Shi (Scholar) of the last Last Civil Service Examination in the Qing Dynasty, Imperial College, Beijing
5) Chu Jian Cypress, Temple of Confucius, Beijing - these old Cypress were planted during the Yuan Dynasty, some trees are more than 700 years old !
6) Da Cheng Hall (Hall of Great Achievements), Temple of Confucius, Beijing - the main structure of the Temple of Confucius, where Confucius was enshrined & worshipped by emperors, it was first built in 1302 & later destroyed & rebuilt in 1411, in 1600, its roof was converted & covered with green glazed tiles which was replaced by yellow glazed tiles in 1737, the 7-bay 3-row was changed to 9-bay 5-row.
7) Exhibition of Great Confucius, Temple of Confucius, Beijing - the east & west exhibition halls; the west room illustrates "Confucianism & its Influence" , " Confucianism Abroad" .
8) The East Room was where sacrifices were offered to virtuous & learned men including Nangong Shi, Dong Zhongshu, Zhou Dunyi, Cheng Hao, Ouyang Xiu, Fang Zhongyan & Wang Shouren. It now serves as an exhibition room.

Olympic Green, Chaoyang - an Olympic Park in Chaoyang, Beijing, the 3 main facilities here include The National Stadium (Bird Nest), Water Cube & The National Indoor Stadium; Olympic Green was originally constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympic & the 2008 Summer Paralympics. Best time to visit is in the evening when the light is on, looks extremely charming with colored lights changing alternately !
1) Metro train ride (17.30) from Yonghegong > Olympic Park (Line 8 & 15) - my evening visit to Bird's Nest National Stadium & Water Cube (National Aquatic Center); return Metro train ride from Olympic Park > Dongzhimen.

3) Beijing Olympic Tower, Chaoyang, Beijing - located on Kehui South Road, part of the Olympic Green in Chaoyang District of Beijing, constructed in 2011, 3 years after the 2008 Summer Olympic, completed in 2014 & opened to the public on Aug 2015.

Small Eat - Dinner in a food court near the Dongzhimen Metro Station - savoured a hot pot of braised chicken (Rmb20) + vegetables (Rmb7) = Rmb27 (US$3.70).
