Last year in January, I visited Bangkok during a weekend but due to a heavy booking for train tickets (departing Hua Lamphong > Kanchanaburi) , I missed an opportunity to visit the Bridge over the River Kwai. So for this trip, I was very determined and took a train ride from Thonburi departing 07.50 to Namtok making a stopover at the Bridge of the River Kwai train station. Another daily train service leaves Thonburi at 13.55.
Our group had to wake up early (06.30) in order to catch a taxi (200bht) from our hostel near Hua Lamphong to Thonburi Train Station (8km) . As the early morning traffic in Bangkok was light, we arrived at the Thonburi train station at around 07.00.
The slow train ride from Thonburi to the Bridge of the River Kwai (100bht) took approx 3.5hr and along the way, we were able to see a fair bit of the Thai country side and a feel of the rural daily life as seen from the train windows & brief stopovers at a number of smaller train stations along the way !
After admiring the scenery in and around the Bridge of the River Kwai, we had our lunch at at eatery outlet near a Souvenir / Food Court. As I was keen to visit the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, the food stall owner offered to drive us there ( using his own car and our group paid 100bht for a 3km drive) .
On our return journey, we took a train ride back to Thonburi arriving at around 19.00. From Thonburi, we took a taxi (200bht) to our hotel near Hua Lamphong.
Indeed, our group enjoyed the slow train ride (non-aircond) from Thonburi to Kanchanaburi, although it was warm & dusty; but overall it was an exciting outing to a popular war historic place of Thailand ! Another dream realized in my own world of travelling !
