China (Dun Huang, Gansu) May 2006 D-14

As our train from Liu Yuan to Xian only departs at 11.29pm so for today we had a long day in Dun Huang.

In the morning, I visited the Dun Huang museum (Rmb15) and really there was not much to see and if you had been to the Xian museum, you could skip this one.

At around 6.00pm, we took a serviced taxi (Rmb30) from Dun Huang to Liu Yuan train station (130km - 2 hrs). Our taxi had a tyre puncture midway so a slight delay but everything was fine.

A train ticket from Liu Yuan to Xian costs Rmb312 for a middle bunk bed, Rmb301 for upper bed. We spent at the train reception for 2hrs before boarding our train to Xian.

Our train passed the Jiayugyan, another garrison town or military outpost along the silk road trail. Due to time constraints, we did not stop overnight at this place. However, from the train window, I captured a picture of the Jiayuguan from a far distance.

" From Xian to Urumqi, the distance is 2,568km . From Urumqi to Kanas Lake is 800km. So for the last 7-8 days , I had travelled by train and bus, covering a total journey of 6,700km (to and return from Xian and Kanas Lake). For the Tran-Siberian train route from Moscow to Vladivostok, the distance is 9,288km (one way). What a great challenge for those who is taking the Tran-Siberian train ride ! But if you are an avid traveller, I believe you will be ready to take up this challenge "
