In 2007, I visited the Ayuthaya UNESCO world heritage site, located about 1.5 hr by bus from Bangkok.

As Sukhothai lies in northern Thailand, about 7hrs by bus from Bangkok, it made sense for me to make a stopover in New Sukhothai town to visit this famous Sukhothai Historical Park, also an UNESCO world heritage site. Sukhothai was once upon a time (during the 13th & 14 century) the first capital of Thailand !

I stayed for 2 nights at the Sila Resort in the New Sukhothai town. Sila Resort offered free pick up service from the Sukhothai bus station. Sila also provide free bicycles for hotel guests' use.

After rested for a night, I started early in the following morning & took a blue Songthaew (30 bht) from a bus stop near the 7-eleven store, about 100m from the Phraruang bridge to Sukhothai Historical Park (old city). The 12km ride took about 20 mins.

Upon arrival at the Park, I rented a bicycle (30 bht) as I believe this was the best way to see the various historical sites, spread over a 5km radius. I spent about 5 hrs in the Park and visited most of the ruins in the Central Zone (admission 100bht) and the Big Buddha (Wat Si Chun) in the North Zone (100 bht). I also had an interesting visit to the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum (150 bht). After seeing the historical sites and the remaining ruins, I must say that I have come to the right place to view this most impressive world heritage site of Thailand ! I just step back in time and admire these magnificent & awesome remaining ruins of the Buddhism & Hinduism monuments built during the golden age of Thai civilisation (13-16 century AD) ! A class of its own !

As my stay was over the weekend, I visited the night market in the Sukhothai town and tasted some of the traditional Thai food from the roadside stalls.

On the 3rd day, the hotel gave me a lift to the Sukhothai bus terminal and from there, I took a morning bus departing for Chiang Mai at around 09.00
