" Cambodia is a Southeast Asian nation whose landscape spans low-lying plains, the Mekong Delta, mountains & Gulf of Thailand coastline. Phnom Penh, its capital is home to the art deco Central Market, glittering Royal Palace & the National Museum's historical & archaeological exhibits. In the country's northwest are the ruins of Angor Wat, a massive stone temple complex built during the Khmer Empire "
Cambodia formerly Kampuchea, ruled by the Khmer Empire in the 15th century, became a protectorate of France in 1863 & incorporated into French Indochina, under Japanese occupation during the 2nd World War, gained independence from France in 1953 led by Prince Norodom Sihanouk, Vietnam War extended into Cambodia in 1965 & led to US bombing of Cambodia from 1969>1973, Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot took control of Phnom Penh in 1975, Cambodian genocide from 1975>1979, Angor Wat (900 years old, founded early 12th century, the Mother of All Temples, an UNESCO site), 97% of populace practises Buddhism, minority groups are Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams & 30 hilltribes, French colonisation & influence, greeting with palms together, Khmer language is hard to learn, Cambodian national flag is the only one in the world to feature a building of the Angor Wat Temple complex, typical traditional Khmer food is quite similar to Thai food but less spicy (consisting of a soup, a salad, freshwater fish dish, vegetables & rice), other favourite food are hot noodle soup, rice with pork, rice porridge, bread & coffee etc, for the adventurous traveller, you could do a 4 in 1 overland bus/train trip from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) > Bangkok (Thailand) > Poipet / Phnom Penh (Cambodia) > Ho Chi Minh / Hanoi (Vietnam) & further your visits to other nearby countries ie southern China, Laos & Singapore !
